Home Market Releases for March 12th, 2019
March 13, 2019
It’s not a good week on the home market. There are some big releases, like Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, but none of them are good. There are a couple of contenders for Pick of the Week, but the The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends: The Complete Series DVD is a re-release at a more reasonable price, while it is worth waiting to get the The Miseducation of Cameron Post: Special Edition Blu-ray. In the end, I went with a late screener, The Forbidden Photos Of A Lady Above Suspicion: Collector’s Edition Blu-ray. It is definitely the best bet for fans of Giallo and / or Film Noir.
The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends: The Complete Series - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
This is one of my favorite shows and the 18-disc set has much better extras than one would expect for a release like this including an interview, original commercials, outtakes, etc. On the downside, there’s music replacement and this is a re-release. On the positive side, it’s much cheaper than the previous release, so if you waited, now is the time to buy it.
Ancient Aliens: Season 11, Volume 2 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
I hate this show. I really hate that it is on the History Channel, because this has almost nothing to do with history.
Armored Trooper Votoms - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Standard Definition on Blu-ray
This Anime is from the early 1980s, hence the Standard Definition on Blu-ray. The source material simply isn’t able to be converted into high definition, but it is still nice to have on Blu-ray, because you get all 52 episodes and all six movies on just three discs.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, 3D Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
I’ve lost interest in this franchise. Since the film earned about a third less at the box office than its predecessor did, a think a lot of fans of the Harry Potter franchise feel the same way. The extras are not bad, but I would wait to see if the franchise can turn things around and then buy the box set in the end.

This is a relatively early Giallo film where the screener arrived late, really late. Was it worth the wait? Or is there a reason this film isn’t as well known as other Giallo films are? Read our review for my opinion.

The Oscar winner for Best Picture. Nope. I’m disappointed it won, but not surprised, because this film is like catnip for Oscar voters, as it talks about racism, but makes a White person the center of the story and use Bothsiderism as a key plot point. The DVD / Blu-ray has three short featurettes as extras, but that’s it.
The title says this is the last mission, but I hope not, because if it is, the franchise is going out on a low note. To be fair, it is still earning good reviews on My Anime List; however, the show is considered an all-time classic, so merely good reviews is a huge step down.
I reviewed one season of this show and I was not a fan. If you are a fan and bought the previous four seasons, then there’s little reason to stop now. It is also coming out on a Full Series Megaset.

The latest Hallmark Channel original movie. It’s about a romance between a cat person and a dog person.
According to Amazon, the Special Edition DVD comes out today, while the Special Edition Blu-ray comes out in two weeks. Very strange. If it is coming out on Blu-ray this week, then it is a Pick of the Week contender. If not, wait for the Blu-ray.

They tried to create the next epic franchise, but they didn’t work hard enough creating a movie people would be interested in seeing in the first place. The extras are better than expected for a movie that bombed in theaters. It’s still not worth a blind buy, but maybe it is worth a rental.
I mentioned this release previously; however the release date appears to have changed. Stranger still, only Neighbors is coming out this week, while the other three movies are coming out at the end of the month. It’s very odd.
Alec Guinness stars as a Cardinal living in an unnamed Easter European country that was oppressed by the Nazis and is now oppressed by the Communists. I put in a request for the screener, but I knew it wouldn’t arrive in time. Hopefully it will get here before the end of the month, but that’s not a guarantee.

A Finnish film about a soldier during the Finnish Continuation War, a.k.a., the military conflict between Finland and Russia during World War II. This film is the most expensive Finnish film ever made and it is selling surprisingly well for a foreign-language film.

There’s a good mix of secondary Blu-ray releases this week. I always liked The Craft, while there are two top-notch Criterion Collection releases as well. There are some horror films here, as well as a couple of Anime titles. Something for everyone.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Green Book - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Mortal Engines - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
The three 4K releases this week are arguably the three biggest releases as well. However, none of them are worth picking up.
The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
The Last Ship - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends is a Pick of the Week contender. The other TV on DVD Megaset coming out this week is not.
