Expect to see a close race at the top of the box office chart this weekend as A Quiet Place: Part II does battle against two newcomers—The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, and Spirit Untamed—and Cruella hopes to make up some ground on the current chart topper after posting solid numbers last weekend. There’s a possibility that four films could top $10 million this weekend, although our model thinks that’s unlikely. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see three films better that number though, which would be another milestone in the recovery of the theatrical market.

A Quiet Place: Part II is headed for a Memorial Day opening of close to $60 million, according to Paramount’s Sunday morning projections. The horror sequel is expected to pick up $48.38 million over three days, and $58 million over four, making it the biggest hit at the box office since theaters started reopening, handily beating Godzilla vs. Kong, which debuted with $32.2 million back in April. Cruella is well behind it in second place, but will top Tom and Jerry to become the best-performing post-pandemic family movie with a $21.3-million 3-day opening, and projected $26.5 million over four days.
Both films are performing well above our model’s predictions, which is an encouraging sign that audiences are returning to theaters.

With no new films opening in over 1,500 theaters, this weekend was always going to be a modest one at the box office as the industry prepares for a make-or-break Memorial Day session. Spiral will repeat at the top of the chart with a projected $4.55 million, according to Lionsgate’s Sunday-morning projection. Its 48% decline from opening weekend is a bit better than expected, and several other films are also holding on well, which means the weekend as a whole looks more solid than feared. It’s still fair to say that A Quiet Place: Part II and Cruella will face virtually no competition when they open this coming weekend.

Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugan Train and Mortal Kombat are both experiencing precipitous declines at the box office this weekend after openings that significantly outperformed expectations. FUNimation is claiming a win for the weekend with a projected $6.421 million for Demon Slayer, but Mortal Kombat is expected to bring in $6.235 million, according to Warner Bros.. That’s a rounding error away, and the performance of each film today will determine who comes out on top when the final numbers are tallied.

With no new wide releases and an already formidable lead at the box office, Godzilla vs. Kong is about as certain a winner in theaters this weekend as it’s possible to be. The main question is how much it will decline this weekend after dropping 57% in its second outing. Our model thinks the benchmark figure for the film will be around $10 million this weekend.

After last weekend’s relatively excellent opening for Godzilla vs. Kong, the theatrical market is treading water this time around, based on the studios’ Sunday morning estimates. GvK itself is performing a little worse than expected, although not terribly considering its coming off the biggest weekend of the pandemic. Voyagers will earn a disappointing $1.35 million opening, and the returning films are something of a mixed bag.

Action thriller Nobody rounds out March with a rollout in 2,460 theaters and its sights firmly set on the top of the box office chart. If the domestic box office is recovering at the pace we hope, it should achieve that goal, but our model’s figures suggest its victory isn’t assured.

Raya and the Last Dragon should post another win at the box office this weekend as new theater reopenings and strong word of mouth are set to boost its performance. Our model predicts it will decline just 28% in its third weekend to $4.09 million while Tom and Jerry is likely to be down around 24% to $3.08 million. Although it isn’t likely to challenge the current top two, new release The Courier should land in the top four and keep the overall market from declining too sharply this weekend.

A solid second-week performance will be enough to keep Raya and the Last Dragon at the top of the box office chart this weekend, according to studio estimates released on Sunday morning. Its strength contributed to unusually large declines for the movies competing with it for family audiences, but generally it looks as though this weekend will continue the modest growth trend in the theatrical market.

After a relative flurry of new wide releases earlier in the month, this weekend sees no films opening in over 1,000 theaters. We do, however, have a close race at the top of the chart to look forward to, and a nearly-wide release that could tell us something about the state of the theatrical market as more theaters open and some potential moviegoers receive their pandemic recovery checks. We’re almost certainly going to have a down week as Raya and the Last Dragon, Chaos Walking, and Boogie decline from their opening weekend numbers.

Raya and the Last Dragon will top the box office chart on its debut weekend with about $8.6 million according to Disney’s Sunday morning projection. While that’s 13% below our model’s $9.87 million prediction, and well behind the $14.11 million earned by Tom and Jerry last weekend, it’s a decent performance for the pandemic era, and some of the other results this weekend point towards a market that’s inching back towards recovery.

After an excellent opening for Tom and Jerry last weekend, all eyes turn to Raya and the Last Dragon. With theaters reopening in New York and San Francisco, the movie’s Disney Animation pedigree and 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and a stronger market for family films than other fare during the pandemic, this seems like a film that could continue the process of rebuilding momentum at the box office. A simultaneous release on Disney+ could put the brakes on though, and our model isn’t convinced it’s set for box office glory.

Tom and Jerry is enjoying the best weekend of 2021 so far, and the third-best of the pandemic era, according to Warner Bros.’ projections released on Sunday mornings. Its $13.71 million opening is a far cry from the $40 million to $50 million it might have earned before the pandemic, but it confirms something we’ve suspected since the stronger-than-expected openings of The War with Grandpa and The Croods: A New Age: family movies are performing much better during the pandemic than other types of film…
