Synopsis

Trailblazer Yayoi Kusama’s turbulent quest to become a world famous artist is documented in Kusama—Infinity; as a rival of Warhol in the ‘60s, Kusama battled sexism and racism in America while her hallucinations of polka dots eventually led her to the Tokyo mental institution she has called home for over 30 years.

Home Market Releases for January 8th, 2019

January 9th, 2019

Frankie Drake Mysteries

We are still in that awkward time on the home market we have to deal with every year. It is too late for the summer blockbusters to come out on DVD / Blu-ray, but too soon for the fall hits or Oscar contenders. This means there’s very little in the way of contenders for Pick of the Week with only one release worth considering, a Canadian show, Frankie Drake Mysteries: Season 1. This does mean I get to give out a Puck of the Week, for best Canadian release. More...

Theater Averages: To Infinity, or to the Top of the Chart, Whichever is Closer

September 13th, 2018

Kusama: Infinity

Kusama: Infinity led the way on the theater average chart with an impressive $15,499 in two theaters. This isn’t enough to think it will earn a real measure of mainstream success, but it is the latest success story in a year of documentary hits. The Nun was in second place with an average of $13,882. The Hows of Us had arguably the most impressive limited opening of the weekend, as it earned an average of $12,895, while playing in 38 theaters. More...

Weekend Estimates: The Nun Continues WB’s Dominance of the Box Office

September 9th, 2018

The Nun

The Nun topped expectations by a sizable margin with $53.5 million during its opening weekend. This is easily the best opening in the franchise so far and the best opening for a Warner Bros. film this year. The film also got off to a fast start internationally with $77.5 million on 15,615 screens in 60 markets. Its best markets were Mexico ($10.7 million on 3,967 screens) and Indonesia ($7.7 million on 1,216). At this point, the film is almost guaranteed a massive profit, despite is awful reviews and its mere C from CinemaScore. Even if it earns less during the rest of its run than it opened with, which is too pessimistic, it will still be a major financial success. There’s no way the franchise will end any time soon. Limited and VOD Releases: I am Not Waiting for Quality Limited Release

September 7th, 2018

I am Not a Witch

We are in an awkward time for limited releases, as summer is over, but it is still too early for Awards Season buzz. This explains why there are so few releases on this week’s list and why none of them will likely be hits. That said, there are two of them, I am Not a Witch and Nelly, that have 100% positive reviews. More...
