Weekend Estimates: The Nun Continues WB’s Dominance of the Box Office
September 9, 2018
The Nun topped expectations by a sizable margin with $53.5 million during its opening weekend. This is easily the best opening in the franchise so far and the best opening for a Warner Bros. film this year. The film also got off to a fast start internationally with $77.5 million on 15,615 screens in 60 markets. Its best markets were Mexico ($10.7 million on 3,967 screens) and Indonesia ($7.7 million on 1,216). At this point, the film is almost guaranteed a massive profit, despite is awful reviews and its mere C from CinemaScore. Even if it earns less during the rest of its run than it opened with, which is too pessimistic, it will still be a major financial success. There’s no way the franchise will end any time soon.
Crazy Rich Asians slipped to second place with $13.6 million over the weekend for a four-week total of $136.2 million. Its still in third place on Warner Bros.’s yearly chart, having just overtaken The Meg. It won’t last in third place long and will indeed become number one before the week is over.
Peppermint opened in third place with $13.26 million, which is about half what it cost to make. This matches our prediction nearly perfectly and is an okay opening for a film that cost about $25 million to make. That said, its reviews and its B plus rating from CinemaScore won’t help its legs, so I don’t expect it to break even until later in its home market run.
The other wide release of the week was God Bless the Broken Road with $1.56 million during its opening weekend. Granted, it wasn’t playing truly wide, so this isn’t as bad as it first looks, but it is still bad. It had some of the worst reviews of the weekend and theater owners will be looking to drop it as soon as they are contractually able to.
Kusama: Infinity had the best start on the limited release front with an average of $15,200 in two theaters.
