Synopsis

After spending years in a Warsaw prison for a violent crime, 20-year-old Daniel is released and sent to a remote village to work as a manual laborer. The job is designed to keep the ex-con busy, but Daniel has a higher calling. Over the course of his incarceration he has found Christ, and aspires to join the clergy—but his criminal record means no seminary will accept him. When Daniel arrives in town, one quick lie allows him to be mistaken for the town’s new priest, and he sets about leading his newfound flock. Though he has no training, his passion and charisma inspire the community. At the same time, his unconventional sermons and unpriestly behavior raise suspicions among some of the townsfolk—even more so as he edges towards a dark secret that the community hasn’t revealed in the confessional booth.

VOD Releases: Trolls Begin a New Tour on VOD

June 24th, 2020

Trolls World Tour

Trolls World Tour is easily the biggest release on this week’s list. In fact, it is bigger than the rest of the films combined. That said, while it should entertain kids, it isn’t the best release. The best is a two-way tie between The Ghost of Peter Sellers and Tokyo Olympiad—two documentaries that are worth checking out. More...

New on Disc: Portrait of a Lady on Fire gets a Picture Perfect Release

June 23rd, 2020

Portrait of a Lady on Fire

This could be the worst week for DVD / Blu-ray releases I’ve seen, outside of when a Tuesday falls on January 1st. The reason for this is simple, Trolls World Tour is hitting VOD. Or to be more precise, it is transitioning from premium VOD to electronic sale through VOD. You can now buy it for the same price you could rent it before. This film is easily the biggest release of the lockdown and it will easily be the biggest DVD / Blu-ray release of the summer. Unless there’s a monster TV-on-DVD release this fall, it will be the biggest release until the pandemic fully subsides. And, since there are parts of the world that are hitting daily records for new cases, including many parts of the United States, that could be a few more months at the very least. Fortunately, while there are only three releases on the highlights list this week, two of them are Pick-of-the-Week contenders. Murder by Decree and Portrait of a Lady on Fire are both absolutely worth picking up, but the latter wins out for Pick of the Week thanks to its Criterion Collection Blu-ray release. More...

Theater Averages: Bill Cunningham has the Time of his Life

February 20th, 2020

The Times of Bill Cunningham

The Times of Bill Cunningham led the way on the per theater chart with an average of $20,973 in two theaters. That’s amazing, especially since it is playing on VOD. The second best new release was Portrait of a Lady on Fire with an average of $19,500. This is arguably more impressive, because it was playing in more theaters, 22 theaters, while it had previously had an Oscar-qualifying run in December. Sonic the Hedgehog rounded out the top five with an average of $13,923. More...

2020 Awards Season: Oscar Nominations

January 13th, 2020

1917

The Oscar nominations were announced on Monday, and the results were... well, there were some puzzling results. Joker led the way with eleven nominations. ... A film with 69% positive reviews earned the most nominations. It’s not the worst-reviewed movie to earn a Best Picture Nomination—after all, Bohemian Rhapsody was nominated just last year. However, this film is arguably the worst-reviewed movie to ever earn the most nominations in a single year. More...
