Theater Averages: Bill Cunningham has the Time of his Life
February 20, 2020
The Times of Bill Cunningham led the way on the per theater chart with an average of $20,973 in two theaters. That’s amazing, especially since it is playing on VOD. The second best new release was Portrait of a Lady on Fire with an average of $19,500. This is arguably more impressive, because it was playing in more theaters, 22 theaters, while it had previously had an Oscar-qualifying run in December. Sonic the Hedgehog rounded out the top five with an average of $13,923.
The were a ton of other new limited releases, most of which struggled. Ordinary Love opened with an average of $7,855 in three theaters, while The Innocent was close behind with $7,191 in one theater. You go to my Head did okay with $5,864, also in one theater. Corpus Christi struggled with an opening of $4,632 in one theater, while The Cordillera of Dreams was right behind with $4,446, also in one theater. I Was at Home, But… and Those Who Remained had very similar opening averages with $4,115 and $3,954 respectively.
Mafia, Inc struggled even more with an average of $3,112, but it was playing in 85 theaters. Olympic Dreams had no such excuse earning an average of $3,097 in just three theaters. Enter the Fat Dragon barely avoided the Mendoza Line ($2,000/theater) with an average of $2,018 in 11 theaters. Finally, First Lady wasn’t as lucky earning an average of $834 in 68 theaters.
