Theater counts: IF narrowly tops Garfield to become widest release on its second weekend in theaters

IF made its theatrical debut last weekend and took in a respectable $33.72 million in its opening attempt, making it the top movie at the domestic box office. The John Krasinski-directed film was relegated to second place as the widest release, but will itself play spoiler to another newcomer as it becomes the widest-playing film in the land this week. Another trio of new films make their appearance this week, including another animated feature in the way of everyone’s favorite comic book cat, as The Garfield Movie makes its arrival into North American cinemas.

After devouring nearly $50 million from overseas showings which began in early May, The Garfield Movie still has 40% of its paw-print to come, including North America and the United Kingdom this weekend, with more rollouts from May to August. Beginning its run in 4,035 theaters, the film follows Garfield, who, after an unexpected reunion with his long-lost father “Vic”, is forced from his perfectly pampered life into joining Vic in a high-stakes heist along with his canine friend Odie. Chris Pratt voices the role of the lasagna-loving feline, while joining him are Samuel L. Jackson (voicing Vic) as well as Snoop Dogg to voice the role of “Snoop Cat.”

Also opening in wide release this week is the post-apocalyptic, action-adventure movie Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth. Taking off in 3,804 venues, the film is the fifth installment in the Mad Max franchise and serves as both a spin-off and prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road, a film that earned just shy of $370 million in worldwide revenue back in 2015. The George Miller film will be available in both traditional formats as well as on IMAX screens where available.

Making its entrance in 2,100 locations is the latest from Angel Studios in the way of biographical drama Sight. Directed by Andrew Hyatt, the film charts the true story of Dr. Ming Wang, a poor Chinese immigrant who defies all odds to become a world-renowned eye surgeon in the United States. The film is based on Wang’s 2016 autobiography, “From Darkness to Sight.”

Rounding out the top five widest releases this week is last week’s title-holder, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, occupying the fourth place spot this week, after dropping 525 locations for a total of 3,550 movie houses. Lastly, still available in a respectable 2,955 venues is newcomer from three weeks ago in The Fall Guy, this week showing in 2,955 theaters.
