Theater counts: Cry Macho and Shang-Chi go head to head

After two weeks on top of the theater count list, and more importantly dominating both the domestic and international box office, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings drops from 4,300 to 4,070 locations to begin its third week. The latest Marvel film has collected a stellar $152 million domestically in its first 13 days of release. Providing stiff competition this week is the latest feature from Warner Bros. in Cry Macho. The neo-Western drama starring and directed by screen legend Clint Eastwood follows a former Texas rodeo star who is hired by his former boss to retrieve his son from Mexico. Cry Macho is estimated to arrive in 3,900 theaters. Also opening wide this week is the action/thriller CopShop, starring Gerard Butler and Frank Grillo. The movie from Open Road Films is set to debut in 3,005 locations.
Launching in limited release this week is Blue Bayou. The drama from Focus Features will show in 477 theaters. Also new this week is the biographical drama, The Eyes of Tammy Faye, which charts the rise and fall of the scandalous televangelists Tammy Faye Bakker and husband, Jim Bakker. The film, starring Jessica Chastain as Tammy Faye Bakker opens in 450 locations. Also debuting this week is the mockumentary The Nowhere Inn, arriving in 46 theaters, and Best Sellers in 16 venues. The latter stars Michael Caine as a cranky author who must take part in a book tour in order to save his publishing boutique. Aubrey Plaza co-stars. Lastly, Lionsgate is re-releasing the 1995 anime hit, Ghost in the Shell in 124 theaters.
Looking ahead to next week we see the release of Universal Pictures’ Dear Evan Hansen. The coming-of-age musical teen drama starring Ben Platt as the title character opens in an estimated 3,300 locations. Also coming to theaters next week is the extended cut re-issue of Sony Pictures’ Courageous, titled Courageous Legacy. The faith-based drama will show in an estimated 1,000 locations…
