Theater counts: The Suicide Squad invades theaters, but Jungle Cruise remains the widest release

Only one wide release hits theaters this week: Warner Bros.’s The Suicide Squad. The James Gunn-directed action film, starring a plethora of Hollywood stars opens in an estimated 4,000 locations, while also being available to stream exclusively on HBO Max. Previews for the latest DCEU/Harley Quinn feature begin at 7pm on Thursday evening. The Suicide Squad has so far scored $6.7M in five international territories, including $4.5M in the United Kingdom. Last week’s widest release, Jungle Cruise dominated the box office during its opening weekend by taking in $35 million from 4,310 locations. The Walt Disney adventure film retains its 4,310 theater count from last week, taking the top spot once again this week.

Rounding out the top five for this week is Old, playing in 3,130 locations; Black Widow, just behind in 3,100 theaters, and Space Jam: A New Legacy in an estimated 3,000 locations. As of today, Black Widow just passed F9: The Fast Saga to become the highest-grossing domestic theatrical release of the pandemic, $169.7 million to $169.6 million…

New in limited release this week is Paramount-Pictures’, Bring Your Own Brigade. The documentary, which highlights the devastating wildfires that ravaged two California towns, debuts in 27 theaters. Also new this week is Naked Singularity, starring John Boyega, Olivia Cooke, Bill Skarsgård, and Ed Skrein, which opens at Village East in New York, NY this week before expanding to 49 theaters on August 13th…

Looking ahead to next week we see three films opening in wide release. The widest of the three is Free Guy, starring Ryan Reynolds. The film about a bank teller who discovers he is a background character in an open world video game called Free City that will soon go offline, arrives in an estimated 4,000 locations. Also debuting next weekend is the Aretha Franklin biopic, Respect, playing in an estimated 3,000 theaters. Lastly, Don’t Breathe 2 hits theaters in an estimated 2,800 locations. The original film earned just shy of $90 million domestically back in 2016.
