Home Market Releases for March 19th, 2019
March 20, 2019
It is a strong week on the home market with two major releases, Mary Poppins Returns and Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, both of which are worth picking up. There are also several smaller releases that are contenders for Pick of the Week, including Born in East L.A., Detour: The Criterion Collection, and Mystery Science Theater 3000 Collection: Volume 10.2. However, as good as those releases are, the Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse DVD / Blu-ray / 4K Ultra HD is the clear choice for Pick of the Week.

Jodie Whittaker stars as a nearly 30 year-old woman who lives in her mother’s shed. She’s given an ultimatum by her mom to grow up and move out, or get kicked out. The reviews are good, but not great, with many critics complaining about Indie Quirkiness being a substitute for real characters. That said, it is worth a rental.
This movie only has 43% positive reviews?! What?! Okay, it’s not a great movie, but it is a fun movie and I must have seen it a dozen times. The Blu-ray is loaded with extras, including both the theatrical and the TV cut of the movie, audio commentary track, over an hour of interviews, etc. It is easily worth picking up and a contender for Pick of the Week.

Two woman who are on the run and in desperate need of money decide to rob their childhood friend, who is both rich and suffers from delusions, so should be easy pickings. You know it won’t be easy, otherwise there wouldn’t be a movie. The film isn’t aimed at a wide audience, but it is worth checking out if you are interested in art house thrillers.
Meghan Ory stars as a divorced mother of twins who returns to her hometown after years away. This is a summer show and the reviews are fine compared to most other such shows. Additionally, a fourth season and a TV movie have been announced, so hopefully it will get a satisfying ending.
A Film Noir movie about a man trying to hitchhike to Hollywood to reunite with his singer girlfriend. However, the man whom he hitches a ride from dies of a drug overdose, so he decides to assume the man’s identity and continue the journey. The film’s reviews on Rotten Tomatoes are 100% positive and it is an absolute classic in the genre. Extras include a 2004 documentary on the director, as well as new interviews and a new featurette on the restoration. It is certainly worth picking up and easily a contender for Pick of the Week.
Being a Doctor Who fan and trying to keep up with all of the home market releases must be exhausting work.

This film didn’t live up to admittedly very high expectations, either with critics or at the box office. Was it unfairly compared to the original? Or were comparisons completely warranted? Read our review for my opinion.
The original Volume 10 had Godzilla vs. Megalon, but they lost the rights to that movie, so they substituted The Giant Gila Monster. This is worth picking up if you don’t have the original, but if you do, hold onto it like you would a newborn child. It is that precious. Also coming out this week is The Deadly Mantis on The Deadly Mantis, which includes, among other extras, the MST3K episode featuring the movie.
This special is earning very good reviews, but its reviews are not quite as good as the full show is earning, so fans might want to stick with that. On the other hand, this could be a good way to get introduced to the show for newcomers.

I wonder if Detective Pikachu is helping boost the franchise as a whole? I was never into the show or card game, but I’ve watched the two trailers about a dozen times each.
The latest installment in the series of Hallmark Channel original movies. They are popular enough to keep getting made, but there are never any reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.

This film won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature and is considered by many to be the best super hero movie of all time. That’s a lot of hype to live up to. Is it as good as they say? Or is it burdened by high expectations? Check out our review to find out.
I put in a request for this screener, but it hasn’t arrived yet. I hope it gets here soon.

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse is the best 4K release of the week. It is not even close.
No TV Megasets this week. I don’t think there are any next week either.

The Untold Story of Detroit Hip Hop - No Reviews - Video on Demand
Welcome to Mercy - Reviews - Video on Demand
There are not a lot of secondary VOD releases on this week’s list and none of them are top-tier releases. I Am Richard Pryor appears to be the best, but Welcome to Mercy is at least worth a rental for horror fans.
