Home Market Releases for July 3rd, 2018
July 3, 2018
We are deep into the summer doldrums on the home market. Blockers is the biggest first-run release of the week, and also the best. The DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack is a contender for Pick of the Week, thanks in part to the lack of competition. It’s not the only contender, as both Dietrich and von Sternberg in Hollywood: The Criterion Collection and JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Set 2: Stardust Crusades Arc are also worthy of that title. In the end, I rolled a dice and Blockers came out on top.

The sequel to Wolfcop, an intentional B-movie about a cop who is also a werewolf. The reviews are good, but not great, while there are four featurettes and a music video as extras. If you are a fan of the intentional B-movie genre, then it is worth checking out. If you liked the first film enough to buy it, then this one is also worth picking up.
This film opened in select theaters, which is a really difficult release schedule to deal with and unsurprisingly it struggled. As a result, there are only two featurettes on the DVD / Blu-ray as extras. That said, it is good enough that it would be worth at least a rental, even if it had no extras. With just these extras, it is probably still worth just a rental, unless you are fans of the cast.

This film’s Tomatometer Score is 83% positive, but the average score was just 6.5 out of 10, so while most critics like it, not that many loved it. It also opened in just over 50 theaters which is too many for a limited release. This explains why it bombed in theaters, while this in turn explains why there are no extras on the DVD / Blu-ray.
A six-disc, six-movie set that has the collaborations between director Josef von Sternberg and actress Marlene Dietrich. They made some amazing films in the 1930s, including two that were nominated for Oscars. The movies are excellent, while there are a trio of new featurettes, to go with the archival extras. If you like classic Hollywood, then this set is a must have.
This film did well enough in limited release that it deserves a Blu-ray release. Perhaps the studio figured its target audience was happy with DVD.
I mentioned the Isekai subgenre of Anime a couple of weeks ago. These are shows about someone thrust into another world and most of them are harem wish-fulfillment garbage. This is not one of the exceptions. In fact, it’s one of the worst in recent memory. How come this gets a full release, but we’re still waiting for Konasuba?
This is one of the weaker Blu-ray releases of this Anime, but it is still a Pick of the Week contender, because the show is just that amazing. The DVD / Blu-ray has interviews with the English-language cast, a featurette on the fandom, and the usual textless opening and closing credits. The limited edition Blu-ray also includes some cards and a 104-page booklet.

This film earned incredible reviews, but it bombed at the box office, so it is getting a featureless DVD / Blu-ray release. That’s too bad, because it could have been a Pick of the Week contender. It is still worth picking up, on the other hand.
If you are into the torture porn genre, this film is one of the earliest examples and still one of the best. On the other hand, if you are not into this subgenre of horror, then I suggest you stay far away.
I swear this has been released already. There are so many Gundam titles that it is hard to keep track of them all. Also coming out this week is the Mobile Suit Gundam AGE: Memory of Eden DVD or Blu-ray, but it is not as good as the other Blu-ray coming out this week.
I watched enough of this show to know I like it, but I never really kept up with it. It is a show I will likely grab when it comes out as a Full Series Megaset.
Mormon movies used to be regular fixtures in limited release, but they seem to have all but disappeared recently. If you are a fan of the genre, this is the biggest release I can think of in a long time, and it still isn’t big enough to get any reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.
