Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.

For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.

We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.

Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

Full financial estimates for this film, including domestic and international box office, video sales, video rentals, TV and ancillary revenue are available through our research services. For more information, please contact us at research@the-numbers.com.

DVD Sales: Cop Out on Top

August 3rd, 2010

It was yet another week of soft DVD sales with none of the new releases lighting up the sales chart. That said, Cop Out was able to take top spot with 325,000 units and $5.45 million in consumer spending at retail. More...

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for July 20th, 2010

July 19th, 2010

The dead zone on the home market continues with only three wide releases... well, two and a half wide releases, none of which matched expectations at the box office. There's not even a lot of limited releases, catalog titles, or TV on DVD releases to compensate. There are some, just not a lot. My favorite title on this week's list is actually a late review: White Collar: Season One on DVD and Blu-ray. Meanwhile, the two best new releases this week have a Canadian Connection, Degrassi: The Next Generations: Season 9 and NHL: Greatest Stanley Cup Moments, both of which earn Puck of the Week honors. More...

Exit Enters Top Spot on the Per Theater Chart

April 27th, 2010

During the second weekend of its release, Exit Through the Gift Shop rose to the top spot on the per theater chart, with an average of $13,356 in 11 theaters. The Secret in Their Eyes was the only other film in the $10,000 club, with an average of $10,911 in 33 theaters for its sophomore stint. In both cases, some further expansion is likely. More...

Square is Hip on the Per Theater Chart

April 13th, 2010

No film earned more than $10,000 on the per theater chart, but The Square came the closest with an average of $8,546 in two theaters. Meanwhile, When You're Strange: A Film About The Doors was right behind with an average of $8,354 in eight theaters. That's enough to suggest that other theater owners will be willing to book these films in the coming weeks. More...

How to Win on the Per Theater Chart

March 30th, 2010

Only one film earned more than $10,000 on the per theater chart, and that was the overall box office leader, How to Train Your Dragon. That film earned an average or $10,785 in more than 4,000 theaters. More...

Weekend Estimates: Dragon Tops Alice, But Doesn't Set Box Office on Fire

March 28th, 2010

As expected, How to Train Your Dragon comfortably won the weekend at the box office, but its early performance can be best described as solid rather than spectacular. With $43.3 million over the weekend, according to Paramount's Sunday estimate, it was easily able to beat Alice in Wonderland ($17.3 million, per Disney), but falls some way behind the opening of Monsters vs. Aliens, which debuted this weekend last year. Given Dragon's better reviews, it should have better legs than Monsters vs. Aliens, but it has a lot of work to do if it's going to earn much more than $100 million. More...

Lots of Green for Greenberg on the Per Theater Chart

March 23rd, 2010

Greenberg easily led the way on the per theater chart with an average of $39,384 in three theaters. This was more than twice as much as the second place movie, City Island, which averaged $16,001 in two theaters. Hubble 3D was the last film in the $10,000 club with an average of $10,536 per theater, while The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo just missed that mark with an average of $9,868. More...

Weekend Estimates: Alice Makes it Three in a Row

March 21st, 2010

Alice in Wonderland is enjoying a third straight win on the box office charts this weekend, according to studio estimates released on Sunday. With another $34.5 million or so in the bank, Alice will have rung up over $265 million by the end of the day. After Avatar's domination at the beginning of the year, 2010 is really shaping up to be the year of 3D movies. More...

Runaway Limited Releases

March 19th, 2010

A large list of limited releases this week, including a few that are opening large for a limited release. The Runaways is the biggest limited release of the week, perhaps too big, but The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is earning the best reviews. More...

2010 Preview: March

March 1st, 2010

February was a stronger than expected month, for the most part, but 2010 continued to lose ground to 2009. Hopefully this trend will reverse itself, but it could be tough. Last March started with Watchmen, which earned just over $100 million at the box office. The month ended with Monsters vs. Aliens, which earned nearly $200 million. Granted, between these two releases there were a fair number of bombs, but it might be hard for this year to match last year at the top. More...

More...
