TV on DVD is at its peak for the year, just in time for the new season to start. However, because last season was cut short by the writers' strike, and so many studios are not taking that into account in the pricing, there are fewer releases at are contenders for DVD Pick of the Week. But we do have a worthy recipient of the award: Fist of Legend - Buy from Amazon, the latest release from Dragon Dynasty. Also, while the week was slow on top, it was busy overall, so much so that we had to split the week's list into two parts again. Part II can be found here.

It was a busy week for new releases but, as expected, Spider-man 3 topped the sales chart with 2.40 million units sold for $42.44 million in sales. This is substantially lower than The Transformers' first week sales, despite Spider-man 3 being the highest grossing film of the year. On the other hand, the film sold 130,000 Blu-Ray discs, which may or may not be a record for high definition releases. There are some... confusion with the numbers, so much so that there are accusations of impropriety, intentional or otherwise.

As it was on the sales chart, so it was on the rental chart: there were plenty of new releases, but Spider-man 3 came away on top with $9.70 million in rentals.

Another massive week for releases with dozens of releases mentioned below (and in the second part).
Of these numerous releases, there were several that were in contention for the DVD Pick of the Week, but I was able to narrow the selection down to just two: Spider-Man 3 - Blu-Ray Edition and Looney Tunes - Golden Collection - Volume Five. Blu-Ray finally gets on the board and scores a DVD Pick of the Week, but it won't be the last. In fact, I have a funny feeling the format will score its second award.

Only three films were able to crack into the $10,000 club on the per theater chart.
The only new release to do so was Knocked Up, which was barely able to reach that figure with $10,690.
Second place went to The Golden Door with $10,169, while the overall number one film, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, earned third place with $10,134.

A busy week for new sites with roughly a dozen making their first appearance on this week's list. However, it was a site making its last appearance, Knocked Up - Official Site, that was judged best-of-the-best.

Limited releases this week are led by Day Watch, the sequel to the under-appreciated Night Watch. While that film has probably the best shot at some measure of mainstream success, it is not the only one that could expand after this weekend.

Not the best week for sites as there was only one that had even a chance of winning, Surf's Up - Official Site. There were a couple others that showed potential, but they will need a little more work to win.

Even with the extra day, it was a slow week for websites. There were a couple films to have their full sites go live this week, but in both cases there was a lack of features. The best of the list is Pathfinder - Official Site, but it's not up to the level of an award winner.

Awesome. We are finally getting some major updates to the summer blockbuster movies. The ones people are watching to see if they break records. This includes the first half of the massively interactive website for Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End - Official Site. And while the site isn't done yet, it is still more than enough to win the Weekly Website Award.
