Synopsis
Scott has been a case of arrested development ever since his firefighter father died when he was seven. He’s now reached his mid-20s having achieved little, chasing a dream of becoming a tattoo artist that seems far out of reach. As his ambitious younger sister heads off to college, Scott is still living with his exhausted ER nurse mother and spends his days smoking weed, hanging with the guys—Oscar, Igor and Richie—and secretly hooking up with his childhood friend Kelsey. But when his mother starts dating a loudmouth firefighter named Ray, it sets off a chain of events that will force Scott to grapple with his grief and take his first tentative steps toward moving forward in life.

Normally this time of year is a transitional period, as the flood of TV on DVD releases begins to give way to the soon-to-be flood of summer blockbusters. However, the pandemic means there are no summer blockbusters coming out this week, or next week. Or next month. Or the month after that. There are still a couple of bigger TV-on-DVD releases, including The Flash, but the biggest recent theatrical releases hardly made an impact. The best release on this week’s list is Yes, God, Yes, but Amazon has it currently unavailable, so grab it from Target instead.

There are some relatively big titles on this week’s list of VOD releases. The King of Staten Island and The Wretched both earned some of the loudest buzz during the pandemic-induced disruptions. However, it is a smaller film on this week’s list, Max Reload and the Nether Blasters, that I’m most interested in, as it hits the right nerdy notes for me. I’m also cautiously optimistic about Perry Mason: Season 1.

The King of Staten Island is the biggest VOD release of the week, but you will have to wait until Friday to rent it on Premium VOD. There are also a couple of TV shows hitting VOD this week, Doctor Who: The Complete Twelfth Series and Modern Family: The Eleventh and Final Season. Other highlights include a family film, Think Like a Dog, as well as You Don’t Nomi, a documentary about the very non-family film Showgirls.
