Synopsis
When first-time teacher Russ Shepherd comes to Kugluktuk, he brings preconceived notions about northern life and no little hubris about his self imposed mission to bring about change. An interconnected chain of dramatic incidents, however (and some quieter cross-cultural corrections) lead Russ to understand that education is a two-way street. Initially, the hastily built lacrosse team seems mild after-school fun, but soon becomes the lightening rod for the community’s differing views on its future

It’s another slow week for limited releases and none of the films here will likely find an audience in theaters. Two of them do have a chance to find an audience on the home market, though. The Grizzlies is an award-winning Canadian film set in the far north, while The Painted Bird is a Czech war film that is likely too brutal to find a sizable audience. Hopefully both films can attract some moviegoers.

Under the Silver Lake earned top spot on the theater average chart with an average of $17,635 in two theaters. This is amazing for two reasons. Firstly, its reviews are barely above the 50% level. Secondly, it opened on VOD on Tuesday, so anyone who was interested in seeing the movie didn’t have to wait long to see it at home instead. On the other hand, it is a A24 release and the company has had an amazing track record at the box office during its young career.
