Synopsis
Nik is a carefree teenager in a small town with a crush on the school beauty and ambitions to start his own internet café. His world is suddenly up-ended when his father and uncle become entangled in a land dispute that leaves a fellow villager murdered. According to a centuries-old code of law, this entitles the dead man’s family to take the life of a male from Nik’s family as retribution. His uncle in jail and his father in hiding, Nik is the prime target and confined to the home while his younger sister Rudina is forced to leave school and take over their father’s business.

It's a mixed week on the home market. Granted, Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted is coming out, which made more than $200 million domestically and should sell quite well on the home market. On the other hand, the second biggest first run release is That's My Boy, which failed to make an impact at the box office. There is also a flood of weaker releases, secondary Blu-ray releases, and Christmas releases, much of which I would consider filler. The signal to noise ratio is a little off. As for the best releases of the week, there are some great TV on DVD releases like Mad Men: Season Five and Degrassi: Season 11, Part 2. There are also some limited releases, like Moonrise Kingdom on Blu-ray Combo Pack and even some Direct-to-DVD releases, like Excision on Blu-ray. All of these were contenders for Pick of the Week. In the end I went with Mad Men: Season Five for Pick of the week, while Degrassi: Season 11, Part 2 earned Puck of the Week.

It was another slow week on the per theater chart with no film topping $10,000. The closest any film got was The Forgiveness of Blood with an average of $8,908 in three theaters. Goon's opening is also worth noting, as it made $1.27 million in 258 theaters in Canada. It is very rare for a Canadian film to open in more than a handful of theaters, while opening with more than $1 million almost never happens. It would be nice if the film could replicate this success in the States, but it is monstrously unlikely.

After a couple weeks of Oscar nominated films coming out in limited release, it is literally
Oscar week. Fans of art house films will likely be distracted with award ceremonies, so it is no real surprise that there are not that many limited releases. The film I'm most interested in seeing is
Goon, but if you don't live in Canada, you will have to wait till the 30th of March to see it.
