Spider-Man: No Way Home is back at the top of the box office chart this weekend, with Sony projecting it will earn $14.125 million this time around for a domestic total of $721 million. Scream will be down 59% from its opening (in line with our model’s prediction). Its $12.4 million takes it to $51.3 million so far. Redeeming Love is coming in well ahead of our Friday-morning prediction with $3.71 million over the weekend and will land in fourth place.

As I said on Friday, the measure of success for West Side Story is not so much how it opens as how strong its legs are. Based on its performance through this weekend, there’s cause for some mild optimism. Ahead of the weekend, our model expected an opening around $6.9 million, based on its debut in a relatively modest 2,820 theaters and current market conditions. Its $800,000 in preview earnings suggested a weekend close to $10 million was on the cards, and bumped the model’s prediction up to $8.27 million. This morning Disney announced a projected $10.5 million for the film over its opening weekend. While that’s hardly a reason for dancing in the streets, it does suggest the film will play well for a while.

This is shaping up to be an interesting weekend at the box office, with three movies having a theoretical shot at coming out on top. Our model marginally favors Encanto, which should have a strong hold as Holiday Season hots up. West Side Story is hot on its heels though, and could easily come out on top based on its $800,000 in previews on Thursday. Even Ghostbusters: Afterlife has an outside shot at pulling off a surprise win.

Encanto will do enough this weekend to hold on to top spot at the box office, according to studio estimates released on Sunday. With a projected $12.739 million this time around, Disney’s animated adventure will end the weekend with around $58 million in total domestically. It will be down 53% from the Friday–Sunday portion of Thanksgiving—a little stronger than Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which will be off 57% in its third weekend. Afterlife will take in $10.35 million this weekend, according to Sony, for $102.2 million to date.

With no major new releases this weekend, the race at the box office will be between returning films, and our model thinks we’ll have a surprise winner. After trailing Encanto by just $3 million over the Friday–Sunday portion of the Thanksgiving Holiday, Ghostbusters: Afterlife is favored to win this weekend by a similar margin.

The first Thanksgiving with a full slate of new releases during the pandemic was full of uncertainty for theater owners. Family audiences have been returning to theaters but remain at about half their usual level, while the older crowd is mostly on the sidelines and at around 30% of its pre-pandemic size. A holiday weekend dominated by family fair like Encanto and Ghostbusters: Afterlife, with a side dish of the older-skewing House of Gucci is a welcome sight, but the big question was who would show. As it turns out, we’re looking at a modest weekend, with audiences hovering around their long term trend rather than rushing back to theaters.
