Synopsis
Eve is a young chambermaid working in one of the most luxurious hotels in Mexico City, an exclusive glass tower inhabited by guests so wealthy she can only imagine their lives through intimate fantasies of the belongings they’ve left behind. Long work shifts prevent Eve from caring for her own child while she helps guests with their own children, but she believes her situation will improve if she gets promoted to work at the executive-level suites. So she accepts a grueling schedule and enrolls in the hotel’s adult education program. A budding friendship with her coworker and an awkward, silent flirtation with an inaccessible window-washer prod her toward much needed bravery. But when things don’t go as planned, Eve transforms her lonely explorations and newfound courage into the necessary strength to face a life outside the glimmering tower.

The first two installments of our Holiday Gift Guide had plenty of first-run releases and several TV on DVD releases. This installment includes limited releases and foreign imports. The list of classics isn’t up to the usual standards for the same reasons the TV on DVD list was rather short. Streaming is taking over that part of the market. Did you know The Criterion Collection has their own streaming service? So does Magnolia Pictures. On the one hand, that’s a lot of amazing movies for one price. On the other hand, as a fan of physical media, I’m not happy streaming is becoming so popular. There are still some great smaller titles worthy of the season.

The Chambermaid topped the theater average chart with $28,490 in one theater, which is double The Other Story’s opening of $14,163, also in one theater. The only other film in the $10,000 club was Toy Story 4, which remained in first place on the overall chart, while earning an average of $13,049.

It is not a particularly busy week for limited releases, but there are a few that are worth checking out. This includes The Chambermaid, but it is two documentaries, Maiden and You Don’t Nomi, that are the most interesting to me.
