International Box Office: Breakup Breaks the Competition
October 9, 2014
Breakup Buddies led the way in China and overall with a weekend total of $38.0 million over the weekend for a six-day total of $94.13 million. That's fantastic start for a local film in this market.
Gone Girl landed in second place with $24.6 million in 39 markets. Its biggest market was the U.K., where it made $6.56 million on 549 screens over the weekend. This is similar to its opening here, given the size of the two markets. It was relatively better in Australia with $4.07 million on 401 screens over the weekend for a total opening of of $4.34 million. It also placed first in Russia with $3.22 million on 1,049 screens in Russia, but had to settle for second place in Germany with $2.48 million on 445.
Bang Bang was right behind with $24.19 million in 8 markets during its opening weekend. It made $15.32 million during its five-day holiday weekend in India. Outside of its native market, it made $962,000 on 126 screens in the U.K.
Dracula Untold had a mediocre opening earning fourth place with $21 million in 25 markets. It did do well in Mexico earning first place with $4.9 million on 640 screens. On the other hand, it only managed second place in the U.K. with an opening of $2.74 million on 449 screens. This is equivalent to a $15 million opening here, more or less.
Annabelle rocketed up to fifth place with $20 million in 24 markets over the weekend for an early total of $23 million. More than half of its total came from Asia. This includes South Korea, where it opened with $2.43 million on 464 screens over the weekend for a total opening on $3.03 million. This was only enough for fourth in that market. It also only managed fourth place in Australia with $1.65 million on 166 screens. On the other hand, the film earned first place in Indonesia with $2.39 million on 353 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $2.96 million, while it placed second in Italy with $1.19 million on 249.
The Maze Runner fell from first place to sixth place with $16.8 million in 63 markets for a four-week total of $119.3 million. Despite the decline, the film did reach the century mark before the weekend, so the studio should be happy. It was coasting on holdovers over the weekend, but it has yet to open in Italy, the U.K., France, Germany, Japan and other markets, so its box office run is far from over.
The Equalizer fell to seventh with $13.0 million in 70 markets over the weekend for a total of $39.6 million after two weeks of release. The only major market opening this weekend was in France where it earned second place with $2.10 million on 376 screens.
Black & White: The Dawn of Justice opened in second place in China and eighth place internationally with $10.0 million over the three-day weekend for a five-day opening of $20.08 million.
Dearest fell to third place in China with $6.5 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $35.37 million.
The Boxtrolls rounded out the top ten with $6.4 million in 22 markets for a two-week total of $26.4 million. The film earned fifth place in both Brazil ($690,000 on 338 screens) and in Italy ($522,000 on 380). It is still early, but it will need some serious help to pull things around.
Lucy fell out of the top ten, but it reached a major milestone with $6.2 million in 64 markets over the weekend. It has now pulled in $281.4 million internationally and $407.2 million worldwide.
