Theater counts: Deadpool & Wolverine three-peats as widest release

After two weeks of dominance at the box office, Deadpool & Wolverine is still pulling in remarkable numbers during both weekend and weekday showings. The sequel crossed the $900 million mark worldwide on Wednesday and should find itself as the newest member of the $1 billion club at the weekend’s close. The film will have to fend off three newcomers, however, if it wants to remain atop the domestic box office podium.

The widest of the new releases to grace theaters this weekend, It Ends With Us, stars another member of the Reynolds household, Blake Lively. Beginning its run in 3,611 theaters, the romantic drama follows a woman in turmoil, caught between a new, toxic relationship and an old love who re-enters her life. The movie is based on the 2016 Colleen Hoover novel of the same name, which itself was based on the relationship between her own mother and father. Justin Baldoni directs and stars in the film alongside Lively.

Also opening in wide release this weekend is Borderlands. The sci-fi action-comedy based on the popular video game of the same name will debut in 3,125 locations. Directed by Eli Roth, who last helmed 2023’s Thanksgiving, features a who’s who of Hollywood star power, including Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, and Jack Black, among others. The movie follows a ragtag group of misfits tasked with finding the missing daughter of the most powerful man in the universe.

Making its debut in 1,503 venues this weekend is the German-set horror film, Cuckoo. The film follows a teenage girl who, after moving to the German Alps with her father, experiences strange disturbances, awakening her to a sinister plot. Hunter Schafer stars in the Tilman Singer-directed feature.

Rounding out the top five this weekend is for the third time, the widest release in the land with Deadpool & Wolverine, increasing viewing opportunities by adding 100 venues in its third frame for a total of 4,330 this weekend. Occupying the second-place spot is Twisters, dropping below 4,000 theaters for the first time, but still landing in a respectable 3,662 movie houses. The fourth-widest release is one of last week’s newcomers, with Harold and the Purple Crayon holding onto its opening count of 3,325 as it enters its sophomore phase. Lastly, the other rookie to open last weekend, Trap, also maintains its debut count of 3,181 cinemas.

Looking ahead to next weekend, we see a plethora of wide releases make their bow. These include, Alien: Romulus, My Penguin Friend, Ryan’s World the Movie: Titan Universe Adventure, and Skincare. We will update these counts when they become available.
