Weekend actuals: Black Adam makes it three in a row

Black Adam

As expected, Black Adam comfortably held on to top spot at the box office over the weekend, declining a respectable 33% to $18.27 million, according to Warner Bros.. The super hero actioner now stands at $137.1 million domestically and $319.4 million worldwide, making it the most successful film in the DC Extended Universe since 2019’s Shazam!. Meanwhile, One Piece Film: Red fell a little short of expectations to finish second domestically with $9.3 million on debut.

Here are the final numbers for the weekend (click on the image for the full chart of films reporting so far)…

Black Adam really made the most of the last weekend before it’ll get swept away by Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Its 33% decline was a little better than expected on a weekend when returning films had mixed fortunes. Halloween Ends suffered another steep drop, this time declining 65% in its fourth weekend to reach $63.5 million. That result can be partially excused by it being the weekend after Halloween, but the second-worst-performing horror movie at the weekend was Smile, which fell just 27% to $4.0 million and is now just $907,000 short of the $100-million mark.

At the beginning of October, our model was predicting around $50 million for Smile and $90 million for Halloween Ends. The actual result will be close to the exact opposite of that.

The strongest-performing film over the weekend was Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile, which took a hit last weekend as kids went out trick-or-treating, and has bounced back with a flourish. It will most likely continue losing theaters, but could serve as good kid-friendly counter-programming for movie theaters between now and Thanksgiving, when Strange World should take over that niche.

Also performing notably at the weekend was The Banshees of Inisherin, which topped $2 million over the three days. As I noted on Friday, Banshees’ expansion was beyond the scope of our model so the “prediction” was speculative. That it did better than expected is good news though.

Overall, the weekend came in just about in line with expectations. Unfortunately, expectations were very low, and we’ll be relying on Black Panther to do enormous business to carry the industry through to Thanksgiving. The good news is that it looks quite likely to do so—more on that very soon.
