Theater counts: Ticket to Paradise is propelled to widest release as it expands to 4,066 theaters
November 3, 2022
After spending its first two weeks in the shadow of Black Adam at both the box office and as the widest release, Ticket to Paradise is adding 374 locations to kick off its third week, clocking in with 4,066 theaters to be exact, while also becoming the only film showing in over 4,000 cinemas this weekend, with Black Adam narrowly falling under that mark with 3,985. The romantic comedy starring Julia Roberts and George Clooney has so far amassed $128 million in worldwide earnings, including $38 million from North American patrons.
New to the big screen this week is the latest anime action feature from Crunchyroll in One Piece Film: Red. The movie, which is making its domestic launch on 3,211 screens from over 2,400 theaters, has earned almost $120 million in Japan and nearly $150 million worldwide so far. Opening in Japan on August 6, the film currently holds the record of the 11th-highest-grossing film in its native country.
As previously mentioned, current box office champ Black Adam slips into second place on the theater count this week but is still expected to reign supreme at the box office for one more week. Debuting simultaneously alongside Ticket to Paradise two weeks ago, the superhero film has taken in $117 million domestically and $139 million from overseas markets. Rounding out the top five this week is Smile, appearing in 3,046 locations, Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile charting at number four with 3,005 theaters, and finally, last week’s newcomer Prey for the Devil, with no change from last week, settling in with 2,980 movie houses.
Worthy of mention are two films expanding wide this week as The Banshees of Inisherin increases from 58 locations last week to 895 theaters this week, and Armageddon Time adds 1,000 locations this week to make it available in 1,006 cinemas.
A huge list of limited releases are making their theatrical debut including Tad the Lost Explorer and the Emerald Tablet which makes its North American debut in 135 movie houses after scoring over $30 million from international rollouts that began in August. Also known as Tad the Lost Explorer and the Curse of the Mummy, the animated comedy-adventure is directed by Enrique Gato and follows a clumsy archaeologist who breaks a sarcophagus and casts a spell that threatens his friends, which takes them on an adventure to Mexico and Paris. Other movies opening in limited release are the documentaries Salvatore: Shoemaker of Dreams and Good Night Oppy, and Irish psychological thriller Nocebo.
Looking ahead to next week we see the release of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The 30th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the superhero sequel is projected to land in 4,300 theaters.
