Theater counts: Don’t Worry Darling repeats, while a trio of new wide releases land in theaters
September 29, 2022
Last week was dominated by newcomer Don’t Worry Darling as the 1950s set thriller earned $19.35 million in its opening weekend from 4,113 locations (which included a solid $3.1 million from Monday IMAX and Thursday evening previews) . After accumulating $24.35 million in its first six days, Don’t Worry Darling adds eight cinemas this week, bringing the current count to 4,121. It will likely be one week and done at the top of the box office charts, but for at least one more week the film outpaces the pack regarding its viewing availability.
Looking to top the box office this weekend come three new arrivals in Smile, Bros, and The Good House. The widest of the newcomers making their way into theaters is the psychological horror film Smile. Clocking in with 3,650 locations, the Parker Finn-directed movie stars Sosie Bacon as Dr. Rose Carter, who, after witnessing a bizarre, traumatic incident involving one of her patients, begins experiencing frightening occurrences that she can’t explain. The $17 million-budgeted horror from Paramount Pictures also arrives in 58 international territories this weekend.
The next widest release comes in the form of the LGBT romantic comedy Bros. Directed by Nicholas Stoller and starring actor and comedian Billy Eichner, the film follows Bobby Lieber (Eichner), an “out and proud but also scared and self-doubting” man who falls in love with a lawyer after being hired to write a romantic comedy about a gay couple. Bros debuts in 3,350 locations.
Also making its way into theaters this week is The Good House, starring Hollywood staples Sigourney Weaver and Kevin Kline. Based on the 2013 novel of the same name by Ann Leary, the New England-set comedy-drama will be available in 1,062 cinemas throughout North America.
Rounding out the top five we see The Woman King, churning in 3,504 cinemas, and depending on where Pearl lands this week, Barbarian takes the fifth position, coming in at a confirmed 2,720 theaters.
Looking ahead to next week we see two new wide releases coming to theaters. Projected to arrive in 4,000+ locations, the largest of the two will be Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile. The live-action/animated musical comedy is based on the children’s book of the same name and features Shawn Mendes as a singing crocodile named Lyle. Also showing next week is the 1930s crime comedy, Amsterdam. The film, which includes a huge lead ensemble cast, is expected to show up in about 2,500 movie houses. Lastly, TÁR will turn up in four locations this weekend, and is targeting a wide expansion on October 28.
