Theater counts: Spider-Man has no equal heading into the New Year
December 30, 2021
Once again the New Year is right around the corner and per usual, it will be a slow weekend as far as new releases are concerned. That said, most films would be hard-pressed to compete with the phenom that is Spider-Man: No Way Home. The latest film featuring the webbed superhero has stunned the movie world by racking up huge numbers at the box office since its release nearly two weeks ago. The film has to date collected well over $1 billion worldwide, including nearly $537 million domestically and now sits at number 12 in all-time domestic earnings; again after only 13 days.
On Tuesday, Spider-Man: No Way Home became the highest grossing film for Sony Pictures, surpassing Spider-Man: Far From Home. The film does take a slight dip in theaters this week; from 4,336 to 4,206, but is nevertheless poised to put up impressive numbers as it heads into its third week. Not to be overlooked is the animated sequel Sing 2. The film opened on December 22 and has earned over $62 million in North America during its first eight days. Sing 2 keeps its opening weekend count of 3,892 locations going into the new year. The Matrix Resurrections unfortunately did not live up to most expectations, falling short by taking in $12 million in its opening weekend from 3,552 theaters. The latest in the Matrix franchise has earned $24.5 million domestically and $44.2 million internationally, for a worldwide total of $68.7 million.
Opening in limited release this week Jockey. The film starring Clifton Collins, Jr. follows an aging jockey who hopes to win one last title for his longtime trainer, who has acquired what appears to be a championship horse. The film opened today, December 29 in select cities across North America. Also opening in limited release on Friday is Sensation. The film, starring Eugene Simon and Emily Wyatt follows a lowly postman who is inducted into a top-secret superhuman DNA program, where he will be able to receive, control and send information based on the senses of others.
Looking ahead to next week we see one wide release landing in theaters. The 355 is set to open in an estimated 3,000 locations. The all-female action-thriller stars Jessica Chastain, Penélope Cruz, Fan Bingbing, Diane Kruger and Lupita Nyong’o as international agents tasked to recover a top-secret weapon. The film is directed by Simon Kinberg from a story and screenplay by Kinberg and Theresa Rebeck.
