Weekend estimates: Wonder Woman stays top over New Year’s Weekend
January 3, 2021
Wonder Woman 1984 will remain top at the box office this weekend, according to studio estimates released on Sunday morning, but it’ll do so in spite of a sharp fall from its opening weekend. Warner Bros. projects a $5.5-million weekend for the super hero pic, down 67% from last weekend. That’s not a huge fall for a film like this by historical standards, but it is a surprisingly-sharp decline for the New Year weekend, and considerably worse than any other film reporting, many of which increased their box office from Christmas weekend.
Overall, it is looking like a topsy-turvy weekend, with some larger-than-expected improvements for family films such as The Croods: A New Age, which is up 25% from last weekend to $2.18 million, and also horror, thriller, and action movies, with Monster Hunter leading the way with a $1.25 million weekend, up 14% from last weekend.
Last weekend’s openers are losing some ground in their second weekends, but are actually outperforming our model by even larger margins. Promising Young Woman is the strongest film in the market based on our model’s expectations. Its $660,000 weekend is more than double what the model predicted. Likewise News of the World, which is 83% above expectations at $1.69 million for the weekend.
When everything is added together, this weekend falls almost exactly in line with expectations, with the top six earning almost $12 million between them. That’s down sharply from last weekend, but about 7% ahead of what the model expected.
Wonder Woman 1984 will bag $15.6 million globally over the weekend from 42 markets, taking its worldwide cume to $118.5 million. The best international market for the film is Australia, which is enjoying relatively few restrictions thanks to low COVID-19 rates. It will earn $3.2 million there this weekend for a total of $11.5 million and is tracking 43% ahead of Wonder Woman in that market—a sign of what might have been if not for the pandemic. The top markets in total for the movie so far are North America with $28.5 million, China with $25 million, Australia with $11.5 million, Taiwan with $8.1 million, Japan with $4.4 million, and Brazil with $3.8 million.
The Croods: A New Age will pick up $7.6 million internationally this weekend for a total of $80.4 million overseas. Combined with $34.5 million domestically, the film now has $114.955 million worldwide. It has earned $52.487 million in China—more than twice the total for Wonder Woman 1984 in that territory.
