Streaming Releases: Will Any of These New Releases Work With Audiences?

August 7, 2020

Work It

It is a slow week with streaming services with only two releases really worth checking out: Howard and Work It. Howard is a great biographical documentary, especially for fans of Disney animated films. Meanwhile, Work It isn’t earning as much critical praise, but it should please its target audience and has more crossover appeal than most movies aimed at teenagers.

Movies

Howard
Video on Demand
A documentary about legendary lyricist Howard Ashman. The reviews are not only overwhelmingly positive, but they are indeed award-worthy.

Work It
Netflix
Sabrina Carpenter stars as a high school senior who needs more extra-curricular activities to get into the college of her choice. She decides to start a dance team and win a dance competition, despite not being able to dance, at all. The film’s reviews are overwhelmingly positive, but not enthusiastic. That said, this still puts it miles ahead of most Netflix films aimed at the same demographic.

Other Movies

Anelka: Misunderstood - Netflix
Sam Jay: 3 in the Morning - Netflix
Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge: Adventure Awaits - Disney+

TV Shows

The Rain: Season Three
Netflix
The first season this show got great reviews. Almost no critics even bothered to review the second season and those that did hated it. The third season will be its last and I don’t think many will miss it given its collapse in quality.

Other TV Shows

Jessy & Nessy: Season One Part B - Amazon Prime
The New York Times Presents - This is Dominic Fike: The Next Big Thing - Hulu
Selling Sunset: Season Three - Netflix
World’s Most Wanted: Seasone One - Netflix
