New on Disc: Come and See Will Come to You
June 30, 2020
The pandemic continues to have an adverse effect on the entertainment industry as a whole, including the home market, with the result that there are no major releases to talk about this week. There are some smaller releases, like The Ghost of Peter Sellers and The Short History of the Long Road, that are worth checking out. Orca: The Killer Whale! is in the “So bad it’s good” camp. That leaves Come and See: The Criterion Collection as the clear winner for Pick of the Week.
Come and See: The Criterion Collection - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
The Ghost of Peter Sellers - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Miss Fisher & The Crypt Of Tears - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Orca: The Killer Whale! - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
The Short History of the Long Road - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This is one of the better limited / VOD releases to come out recently. The lack of extras means you should start with a rental, but it is worth checking out.
After The Rain - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
There are a few smaller releases that are of interest, including After The Rain, Lupin the 3rd, and Scenes from the Class Struggle in Beverly Hills, etc.
Christmas in Evergreen: Tidings of Joy - Buy from Amazon: DVD
A Christmas movie in June. I don't see why Hallmark didn't just wait a few months to release this one.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Season 7 - Buy from Amazon: DVD
The Wild Palms mini-series is the biggest TV on DVD release of the week. However, it was a critical disappointment when it came out nearly 30 years ago and I’m not sure how well it has aged in the meantime.
Highlights
This is one of the most impactful anti-war movies ever made. It is also a Criterion Collection release, so you know it is going to look amazing, and the Blu-ray will be loaded with extras. These extras include several interview featurettes—some new, some archival—as well as a making-of featurette, a documentary series on the real world genocide, and more. It is easily worth picking up.
An amazing documentary about the 1973 pirate comedy movie sabotaged by its star, Peter Sellers, as told by its director, Peter Medak. It is absolutely worth picking up for fans of behind-the-scenes documentaries, but it is only coming out on DVD, which does hurt its overall value.
The TV show is amazing, but this movie spin-off is only okay compared to the average episode. That’s really disappointing. That said, an okay episode of Miss Fisher is still worth watching, but I would recommend a rental for most.
This is one of countless movies that tried to capture the same box office magic as Jaws. It is not the worse of these movies, but it arguably has the biggest negative gap between the quality of the cast and the quality of the movie. It stars both Richard Harris and Charlotte Rampling. (Amazingly, this is not the worst move in either actor’s career.) The only extra on the Blu-ray is an audio commentary track, but if you are a fan of of bad movies, it is still worth checking out. In fact, it is worth buying if you are a fan of bad movies.
For teenager Nola, home is the open road. Her self-reliant father is her anchor in a life of transience. The pair crisscross the United States in a lovingly-refurbished RV, relishing their independence and making ends meet by doing odd jobs. A shocking rupture, though, casts Nola out on her own. She makes her way to Albuquerque, New Mexico, in search of a mother she never knew. When her motorhome unexpectedly breaks down, she forges a bond with an auto body shop owner, and senses the possibility of mooring her ship in this storm.
