Home Market Releases for March 10th, 2020
March 11, 2020
It’s another terrible week on the home market. There are a couple of Oscar-bait releases to talk about, but neither are Pick of the Week contenders, at least in my opinion. There are no movies that are anything more than midlevel hits. The best new release of the week, at least in my opinion, is Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions: Ultimate Collector’s Edition Blu-ray.

Busted Oscar-bait. The film does have some great performances, but the overall film follows the genre clichés too closely to stand out. There is a seven-part making of documentary, which is enough to lift the film to a solid purchase, but not enough to be a contender for Pick of the Week.
Video on Demand
This film isn’t great, but it is certainly better than its box office numbers. It is a fun way to spend an evening, but even then, a rental is probably enough. If you do like the movie, then the extras on the DVD / Blu-ray could be enough for a purchase. There’s no audio commentary track, but there are a quartet of making of featurettes, interviews, deleted scenes, outtakes, and a music video.
I mentioned this anime before. It is set in the real world, but where there is a condition where middle school kids sometimes believe they are the chosen one and gifted with immense power. This delusion eventually ends, resulting in massive embarrassment and they just want to forget about it. The protagonist in this story has it worse than most, because he was featured on a new program, so he can’t forget it as easily. Furthermore, the new girl in his high school is currently undergoing this delusion and knows him from the news program and thinks he can help her. This is a great anime from my favorite anime studio, Kyoto Animation. This box set contains both seasons, the handful of movies, and the short films as well. There are not a lot of additional extras, but that’s common for an anime release and it is still the best title coming out this week.
Video on Demand
The full game plus lots of extras. This is perfect for fans of the Kansas City Chiefs, or to buy as a gift for any 49er fan you know and hate.

Is Uncut Gems busted Oscar-bait? It seems strange to describe an Adam Sandler movie as Oscar-bait, but the film was release by A24 and given their track record in the few short years they’ve been around, it is not unfair to say it was made to win Oscars. That didn’t happen. On the other hand, it did just get to $50 million before the weekend, which is amazing for a limited release. Is the film as good as its box office numbers? Did it deserve to find more success during Awards Season? Read our review to find out.
A young girl is found lost in the woods and adopted by a couple. Later, her past catches up to her and action ensues. The reviews are excellent and anyone interested in Asian action movies in general will want to check it out. On the other hand, there are no extras, which prevents it from being a Pick of the Week contender.

It’s a slow week for TV on DVD releases as well. Nothing here jumps out as worth picking up, at least for me.

There are a couple of James Stewart westerns in the list of secondary Blu-ray releases this week. The two films are not among his best, but they could still be worth checking out.
