Weekend Estimates: Abominable Earning Average-Sized Opening

September 29, 2019

Abominable

It is a mixed bag at the box office this weekend. None of the films are bombing, there are also no wild success stories either. Abominable is leading the way with an estimated $20.85 million opening. This is a little below expectations, but still a fine opening for this time of year. Additionally, its prospects have improved over the weekend, so it is clear its reviews and its A rating from CinemaScore have helped its word-of-mouth and that should help its legs going forward. The film also earned an estimated $8.8 million internationally in 30 markets for an early international total of $10.2 million It is still too early to judge how the film will do overseas.

Downton Abbey is falling faster than expected, down 53%, according to estimates, to earn $14.5 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $58.51 million. It will need to really bounce back next weekend to have a shot at $100 million domestically.

Hustlers is continuing to over perform, earning an estimated $11.47 million over the weekend for a three-week total of $80.63 million. It will get to $100 million before too long.

It: Chapter Two is also beating expectations with an estimated $10.4 million over the weekend for a running tally of $193.9 million. It is doing about the same internationally with an estimated weekend haul of $11.0 million in 78 market for totals of $223.5 million internationally and $417.4 million worldwide. This is already more than enough to break even and it will continue to earn millions more until it finishes its run in Japan at the beginning of November.

Ad Astra slipped to fifth place according to estimates with $10.14 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $35.53 million. On the positive side, this is in line with expectations. On the negative side, it isn’t enough for a film that cost $80 million to make. It is doing better internationally with an estimated $18.0 million over the weekend for totals of $53.5 million internationally and $89.0 million worldwide. If it can do well in markets not handled by Disney (China, Taiwan, Hong Kong) then it will be able to save face, but that’s about it.

Rambo: Last Blood was pushed out of the top five according to estimates, earning $8.58 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $33.15 million. A 55% decline isn’t great, but it also isn’t bad for this type of film. Solidly average.

Judy is earning seventh place with $3.09 million while playing in just 461 theaters. It has the best theater average in the top ten and it has room to grow. This start might be enough to get more attention from Awards Season voters, which will only help the film’s financial chances.

There was one other limited release doing well, First Love. The latest from Takashi Miike is earning an average of $12,075 in two theaters during its opening weekend.
