Weekend Estimates: Everyone Takes it Easy on Labor Day
September 1, 2019
There were no wide releases this weekend, so I really thought the holdovers would hold on a lot better than they did. According to estimates, Angel Has Fallen has fallen 46% during its second weekend of release to $11.58 million and is projected to earn $15 million over the four-day weekend. A 46% sophomore stint decline would have been great, if this weren’t a holiday weekend. As it is, it’s a little disappointing, but the film will still do well enough to earn a profit. ... “Profitable disappointment.” How many times can that phrase be used this year?
Good Boys is earning $9.19 million over the three-day weekend and is projecting to earn $11.59 million over four days. This is almost exactly what the film earned last weekend, while I was expecting a slight increase. It’s close enough to call it a victory. Internationally, the film is still struggling with an estimated $2.7 million over the weekend for a total of $11.7 million so far, which is a mere fraction of its $58.6 million domestic running tally. This is a weak result, but it is also expected as comedies, especially R-rated comedies, don’t translate well into other languages / cultures.
The Lion King is also missing expectations with an estimated $6.7 million over the three-day weekend and a projected $9.2 million four-day weekend. It is doing better internationally with a three-day weekend haul of $20.6 million. Furthermore, the film has made enough worldwide, $1.562 billion by the end of Sunday, that it can not only cover this film’s combined production and advertising budgets, but the combined budget for the next live-action remake.
Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw is struggling with an estimated $6.28 million three-day weekend and a projected $8.05 million four-day weekend. However, it was made for international territories and in that regard, it is doing a whole lot better, earning an estimated $39.1 million over the three-day weekend for totals of $525.3 million internationally and $684.2 million worldwide. Unfortunately, the film fell 72% in its second weekend in China to $27.89 million, for a two-week total of $166.05 million. Films tend to have short legs in China, but this is a sharp decline, even for that market. That said, it will still get to $700 million worldwide, so there’s no reason to panic.
Overcomer earned an estimated $5.70 million over the three-day weekend and $7.86 million over four. Its two-week total is $19.41 million, which is good for a faith-based film.
Ready or Not was right behind with $5.62 million / $6.69 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $21.16 million. The film only cost $6 million to make and while it reportedly cost $24 million to advertise, this is still a great start. It will earn a profit early in its home market run.
There was only one limited release doing well enough to expand, Official Secrets, which is earning just over $80,000 in four theaters for an average of $20,012. Before You Know It is earning an average of $9,000 in three theaters. That’s not a bad start.
