Home Market Releases for May 28th, 2019
May 28, 2019
We are back to normal on the home market for a summer week. That is to say, there’s almost nothing to talk about. The biggest physical release of the week is Outlander: Season Four. The show’s reviews have slipped a little, but they are still earning amazing reviews. However, it airs on Starz, so most people have never seen it and I don’t think it is a good idea to jump into the show in season four. Greta is the next biggest physical release, but it is not Pick of the Week material. That leaves How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, which came out last week, but the screener arrived late. And of course Captain Marvel, which is coming out on VOD this week. So the choice for Pick of the Week is down to a movie I already awarded the title to and a movie that isn’t out on DVD / Blu-ray this week. It’s a tough call, but in the end, I went with How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World. Captain Marvel will have another chance when it comes out on Blu-ray.

A Neo Noir film from the 1980s directed by David Lynch. I love Film Noir and nearly all of David Lynch’s films; however, the level of sexual violence in this movie is a dealbreaker.

A group of dancers are celebrating a successful rehearsal for their new performance. They realize their drink that they’ve been sharing has been spiked with LSD and chaos ensues. The film is too “art house” to attract a mainstream audience. Also, most of the cast are professional dancers and not actors and you can tell. Finally, the only extra on the DVD / Blu-ray is a making of featurette.
So much wasted potential. To be fair, it’s best case scenario was always going to be “too Anime for mainstream audiences”, but it even wasted this, going completely off the deep end in the second half.
I might get a screener to review. As a fan of Jean-Claude Van Damme, I’m looking forward to seeing it.
Video on Demand
I was really looking forward to seeing this movie, but its reviews are not as good as I had hoped they would be. I might get a screener for this film, but it is late. Extras are limited to a single featurette and deleted scenes.
Video on Demand
The screener arrived late, but was it worth the wait? It is supposedly the last film in the franchise. Does the franchise end on a high note? And is the DVD / Blu-ray worth picking up? Check out our review for my opinion.
A time-travel romance starring Caitriona Balfe, Sam Heughan, and Tobias Menzies. The show’s reviews are above 90% and it has been a big hit for Starz. Of course, a big hit for Staza is barely more than 1 million viewers per episode. The show has always been a big hit on the home market and the extras include plenty of featurettes, deleted scenes, etc. The Collector’s Edition also has a picture book. If you are a fan, there’s no reason to not buy this season on the home market as well.
In my opinion, this show hasn’t put out a classic episode in over a decade. In fact, my opinion on the show as a whole has really gotten a lot worse.
This is arguably the weakest of the three series in the Tokyo Ghoul franchise. If you are a huge fan of the franchise, it might still be worth picking up, or it might be such a big disappointment that it will be worth avoiding. It’s hard to tell without having seeing it first, because it as divided fans so much.

There’s a lot of Anime on this week’s list of secondary Blu-ray titles, but none of them are classics. Junji Ito Collection is the biggest disappointment of the week, because the Manga it is based on is one of the best horror Mangas of all time, but the Anime is subpar, to be kind.
There are no 4K releases this week. That’s awfully strange.

Usually I don’t include Anime titles here, because they are almost never actually seen on TV this side of the Pacific Ocean. However, this show was one of the ones 4Kids brought over, so a lot of people saw it on TV here.

Captain Marvel - Reviews - Video on Demand (With Extras)
Starfish - Reviews - Video on Demand
There are only two secondary VOD titles on this week’s list and Captain Marvel is obviously the bigger of the two. That said, Starfish is earning better reviews and it is worth checking out.
