Limited and VOD Releases: A Quiet Week for Limited Releases
May 10, 2019
This week’s limited releases are divided into two groups: films earning reviews that are not good enough for limited release and documentaries earning perfect or near perfect reviews. All is True is the biggest of the first group, while The Silence of Others is the most potent of the second group.

Secondary VOD Releases:
Kenneth Branagh directed and stars in this Shakespeare biopic. Despite the man’s knowledge of Shakespeare’s work, the end result is merely good and likely not good enough to thrive in limited release. That said, it could do well during its opening weekend thanks in part to its star power.
This documentary follows two city dwellers as they move from the big city to their new farm. The reviews are nearly 100% positive, which should help its chances at the box office. On the downside, there are two documentaries below that have 100% positive reviews, so the competition is tight.
A documentary about the Silicon Valley startup General Magic that developed the smart phone, but didn’t last long enough to take advantage of the market it created. The reviews are 100% positive, so hopefully it will do well at the box office, at least compared to most documentaries.
A father returns to his small town when he learns his seven-year old son disappeared. The reviews are just under the overall positive level and well below what is needed to thrive in limited release.
Willem Dafoe stars in this biopic of Pier Paolo Pasolini and it is set during his final day of his life. The reviews are merely good, but not good enough to thrive in limited release. That said, the star power and the subject matter could help it find an audience in art house theaters, even if it doesn’t do well enough to expand.
A documentary about the crimes that happened under the Franco regime in Spain and how the perpetrators were protected by the law. The reviews are 100% positive, so it could find a receptive audience in the art house circuit.
Video on Demand
A group of six women travel to Napa Valley to celebrate the 50th birthday of one of their friends. The reviews are good, but not good enough to thrive in limited release. That said, it is currently playing on Netflix and it is worth watching there.
Origin Story - No Reviews - Video on Demand
The Professor and the Madman - Reviews - Video on Demand
Origin Story has no reviews at the moment, but that still puts it ahead of The Professor and the Madman as far as quality is concerned.
