International Box Office: Captain Marvel Hits $750 million Worldwide in Two Weeks
March 20, 2019
Captain Marvel continued to dominated the competition earning first place on the international chart with $119.7 million in 54 markets for totals of $494.0 million internationally and $758.9 million worldwide. This is already ahead of 10 previous installments in the MCU. The film opened in its last market, Japan, earning first place with $5.6 million. It also earned $23.83 million in China for a two-week total of $131.84 million. This is down by 72% from its opening weekend, which is a sharp decline, even for China, but not a disaster. The film held on better in the rest of the international markets; in fact, on average, it held on better than it did here. This puts $1 billion worldwide within reach, likely by next week, and it might even reach the top five for the MCU.
More Than Blue was next with $46.36 million over the weekend in China for totals of $49.32 million in that market and $57.76 million overall.
Green Book slipped to third place with $17.1 million in 67 markets over the weekend for totals of $192.0 million internationally and $274.62 million worldwide. The film continues to have strong legs in China down just 40% earning $9.35 million over the weekend for a three-week total of $60.77 million.
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World slipped to fourth place with $9.4 million in 63 markets for totals of $330.9 million internationally and $466.5 million worldwide. This film is coasting on holdovers at the moment, and will until it opens in Japan in August.
Escape Room returned to the international top five for the first time since the beginning of the month earning $8.46 million on 3,170 screens in 46 markets for totals of 86.21 million internationally and $14.28 million worldwide. This is a great run for a film that reportedly cost just $9 million to make. This week, the film opened in second place in South Korea with $2.91 million on 850 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $3.09 million. It had to settle for third place in both Spain ($992,000 on 445 screens) and in Italy ($850,000 on 331).
