March 14, 2019
Captain Marvel dominated the international chart even more than it dominated the domestic chart earning $302.0 million in 53 markets during its opening weekend for a worldwide debut of $455.3 million. Unsurprisingly, the film’s biggest market was China, where it earned $86.57 million over the weekend for a total opening of $88.86 million in the market. The film’s second best market was South Korea, where it earned $18.11 million in 2,098 screens for a total opening of $23.98 million. The film managed $16.59 million on 655 theaters in the U.K. and $13.3 million in Brazil. The film also cracked $10 million in Mexico ($12.71 million); Indonesia ($10.8 million); and Russia ($10.71 million). The only market the film didn’t open in is Japan, but it opens there this weekend.
Green Book rose to second place with $28.07 million in 66 markets for totals of $162.52 million internationally and $242.68 million worldwide. The film had no major market openings, but it held on thanks to China. The film dipped just 9% during its second weekend there earning $15.72 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $44.55 million.
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World fell to third place with $22.6 million in 64 markets for totals of $317.2 million internationally and $436.9 million worldwide. The film had no major market openings this past weekend, in fact, it doesn’t have any more major market openings until it debuts in Japan in August. The film fell 75% during its second weekend in China falling to $8.24 million in 10,140 theaters for a two-week total of $47.91 million. However, this is still a great run for an animated film in China.
Alita: Battle Angel fell to fourth place with $11.57 million in 74 markets for totals of $304.31 million internationally and $382.66 million worldwide. The film will hit $400 million worldwide before it is done, but it needed $500 million to break even any time soon.
Natsume’s Book of Friends: The Movie Tied to the Temporal World was next with $10.36 million for a total opening of $21.77 million. This includes $9.61 million over the weekend in China for a total opening of $12.5 million. It earned $1.51 million over the weekend in its native Japan for a total opening of $6.44 million.
