Theater Averages: Climactic Results Over the Weekend
March 7, 2019
It was a really busy week on the Theater Average Chart with a ton of films to talk about, including six films in the $10,000 club. This list was led by Climax with an average of $23,885 in five theaters. Transit was next with an average of $15,966 in two theaters. Giant Little Ones and Apollo 11 had nearly identical averages of $13,500 and $13,392 respectively, but were playing in vastly different number of theaters at 1 and 120 respectively. Furie was a surprise entry in the $10,000 club with an average of $11,151 in 14 theaters. There was only one wide release in the $10,000 club, as Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral earned an average of $11,082.
There was a huge gap between the $10,000 club and the rest of the new limited releases, with Joseph Pulitzer: Voice of the People opening with $5,686 in its lone theater. The Wedding Guest was next with $4,567 in four theaters. Woman at War was next with an average of $3,674 in five theaters. Styx earned $3,420 over the weekend in one theater; however, it was a Wednesday opening its total opening was $7,221. The Sower just avoided the Mendoza Line with an average of $2,064 in two theaters during its opening weekend. (It did have a previous pre-release that pulled in more money, so one could argue that was its true opening weekend.)
Not all films were able to avoid the Mendoza Line. Sonchiriya only managed an average of $860 in 70 theaters. Meanwhile, Saint Judy was close behind with an average of $714 in 55.
This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:
