Weekend Estimates: Miss Bala hits the Glass Ceiling
February 3, 2019
The weekend estimates have Glass remaining on top of the chart with $9.54 million over the weekend, giving it a running tally of $88.66 million after three weeks of release. It is a lock to get to $100 million domestically, although it will likely be pushed out of the top five before it gets there. Internationally, the film is earning $12.2 million over the weekend for totals of $110.3 million internationally and $199.0 million worldwide. It will soon become the first film released in 2019 to get to $200 million worldwide and it isn’t done yet.
The Upside’s weekend estimates place it in second place with $8.85 million for a four-week total of $75.59 million. The competition is going to start squeezing it out of theaters, but it should still get to $100 million domestically before it is done.
According to estimates, Miss Bala is going to match expectations nearly perfectly with $6.7 million over the weekend, which is easily enough for third place. The reviews are weak enough to explain this result, especially with the competition from the Super Bowl.
Aquaman is leading the glut of $4 million films with an estimated $4.79 million over the weekend. The film’s running tally is now $323.53 million, which is simply phenomenal and while this is almost certainly the last weekend it will be in the top five, it has been a fantastic run. Internationally, the film is adding $4.6 million over the weekend according to early estimates. This would be enough to push its worldwide total to $1.1 billion.
Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse is next with an estimated $4.41 million over the weekend for a total of $175.29 million. This is more than enough to cover its entire $90 million production budget. It hasn’t quite done as well internationally, but it has done enough to ensure it breaks even very early in is home market run.
Green Book’s weekend estimate is $4.32 million, which puts it in sixth place on the weekend chart. However, it could move up or down a spot once the final numbers are in.
If estimates hold, then The Kid Who Would Be King will fall to seventh place with $4.20 million over the weekend, 41% lower than its opening weekend. This would have normally been a good sign for the film’s legs, but in this case, it is too little, too late. Its theater average is just $1,190, so a lot of theater owners will be looking to drop it as early as this coming weekend.
They Shall Not Grow Old is missing expectations with an estimated $2.41 million weekend. Granted, the film has already made $10.75 million during its entire run, which includes record-breaking special engagements in December. So while its regular run isn’t great, it is still more than most documentaries can manage.
