International Box Office: Glass Sparkles on Top

January 24, 2019

Glass

Glass opened in first place on the international chart with $48.5 million in 55 markets. Its biggest market was Russia, where it opened with $5.19 million on 1,381 screens. On the other hand, arguably its best market was Mexico, where it earned $4.15 million over the weekend for a total opening of $4.39 million. This is more than double the $2.02 million Split opened with and the record for M. Night Shyamalan in that market. On the down side, the film has practically done its international run and only has China ahead.

Bumblebee was pushed into second place with $20.9 million over the weekend in 64 markets elevated the running total to $296.4 million internationally and $412.4 million worldwide. The film completed the hat trick in China with $16.22 million over the weekend for a three-week total of $138.06 million. It is rare for a film to earn first place three weeks in a row in China, so Paramount will be very happy with this result. In fact, the movie has done so well that even without China, Paramount’s share of the worldwide box office is more than the film cost to make and if it does well in Japan, it could break even before reaching the home market.

Aquaman was next with $15.4 million on 8,900 screens in 79 international territories for totals of $760.4 million internationally and $1.067 billion worldwide. Again, the film had no openings this past weekend and doesn’t until it opens in Japan on the 8th of February.

Bohemian Rhapsody returned to the top five, mainly because its competition fell faster than it did, with $11.31 million in 44 markets for totals of $596.02 million internationally and $798.05 million worldwide.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World entered the top five for the first time in its run with $9.7 million in 13 markets over the weekend for a still early international total of $29.1 million. This includes a first place, $3.33 million opening in 595 theaters in Brazil.
