International Box Office: Bumblebee Stings the Competition
January 16, 2019
Bumblebee remained in first place with $35.6 million in 64 markets for totals of $256.3 million internationally and $365.2 million worldwide. It was able to remain in first place in China with $26.36 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $108.91 million. It fell 55%, which is actually quite good for a film in China. Bumblebee needs about $250 million worldwide, without China, in order to break even during its initial push into the home market. It got there this weekend and it still hasn’t opened in Japan. I think Paramount will be happy with this result and there will be another installment in the Transformers franchise.
Aquaman remained in second place with $29.1 million on 12,913 screens in 79 markets for totals of $733.6 million internationally and $1.022 billion worldwide. The film is cruising on holdovers and will be until in opens in Japan on the 8th of February.
Up next was Dragon Ball Super: Broly, which rose to third place with $20.3 million over the weekend for a total of $54.3 million so far. The film opens domestically this week and it will be interesting to see if it can find an audience here.
The Big Shot expanded in China and that helped it reach second place there and fourth place internationally with $16.26 million over the weekend for a nine-day total of $19.50 million.
Ralph Breaks The Internet landed in fifth place with $15.4 million in 35 markets for totals of $243.7 million internationally and $434.2 million worldwide. The film had no major market openings this past weekend, but it did earn $1.0 million in Poland.
We continue to track How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World before its domestic debut. This past weekend, the film earned $7.8 million in 8 markets for an international total of $15.4 million. Its biggest new market was Indonesia, where it topped the chart with $2.80 million in 684 theaters. Its biggest holdover was Australia, where it earned second place with $2.37 million in 295 theaters over the weekend for a two-week total of $9.19 million. If the film does as well here, then it will earn $150 million domestically.
