International Box Office: Bumblebee Bounces to the Top

January 9, 2019

Bumblebee

Bumblebee rose to first place with $82.7 million in 62 markets for totals of $192.0 million internationally and $289.6 million worldwide. It was able to earn first place thank in part due to its first place debut in China, where it earned $58.06 million over the weekend for a total opening of $59.26 million. The film needs to make more than $150 million in China to have a secure future there. Granted, films in China tend to have short legs, but Transformers has usually been the exception, so I’m cautiously optimistic for its chances.

Aquaman was finally pushed out of top place, but it was still potent with $58.0 million on 18,100 screens in 79 markets over the weekend for totals of $683.2 million internationally and $943.3 million worldwide. The film’s only major market opening came in Italy, where it debuted in second place with $4.23 million on 533 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $7.12 million. The film is already the biggest hit in the D.C.E.U. and it is about to become the first installment in the franchise to crack $1 billion worldwide.

Ralph Breaks The Internet was next with $25.0 million in 32 markets for totals of $217.6 million internationally and $404.8 million worldwide. The film debuted in first place in Italy with $4.56 million over the weekend for a total opening of $7.74 million. The film also opened in first place in South Korea with $4.59 million on 1,453 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $5.46 million, while it did just as well in Brazil with $4.8 million. All of these results were well ahead of the original film and by the time the film opens in its last market in February, it will be ahead of the first film domestically, internationally, and worldwide.

Mary Poppins Returns was right behind with $23.0 million in 47 markets for totals of $119.2million internationally and $258.0 million worldwide. The film opened in third place in Australia with $2.89 million on 521 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $4.80 million from New Year’s Day through Sunday.

Bohemian Rhapsody became the biggest biopic box office hit worldwide with $16.88 million in 42 markets over the weekend for totals of $549.60 million internationally and $743.24 million worldwide.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World doesn’t start its domestic run until the end of February, but it made its international debut this past weekend. The film opened in first place in both Australia ($4.72 million in 287 theaters) and New Zealand ($523,000 in 99).
