Annihilation

This is one of the shortest lists I can remember. Not only are there only 8 releases in the main section, many of them would be secondary releases, at best, during a normal week. That’s not to say there are no releases worth checking out. This list is led by Annihilation on Blu-ray Combo Pack, while the second best new release is ... probably a secondary VOD title?

Annihilation - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
The best new release of the week. It struggled at the box office, but it had a weird international release going direct-to-Netflix in many countries. Because of this, it is nearly impossible to tell if it broke even. It was released by Paramount, so I’m going to guess it lost money. Extras include a three-part making of featurette. That’s not a lot, but it is still a Pick of the Week Contender.

Detectorists: Series 3 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
A British sitcom that is earning incredible reviews, but it’s 6 30-minute episodes for nearly $20. Even compared to most British imports, this is a high price-per-minute.

Fist of the North Star: The Movie - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
This Anime title is about 30 years old, putting it in the same era as Robotech. It is old school, but for fans of Anime, who want to know where the art form was at 30 years ago, it is worth buying. It is a classic movie and worth checking out, even if you are new to Anime.

Lupin the 3rd: Part IV: The Italian Adventure - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Lupin the 3rd is a long-running series that has been around for more than 50 years in one form or another. It is one of the projects Hayao Miyazaki worked on. This series is from 2015 and was well-received among fans of the franchise and of Anime in general. It does have an old school feel to it, but that’s part of the charm.

Midnight Cowboy: The Criterion Collection - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
The only X-rated film to ever win the Best Picture Oscar; although it’s been R-rated for more than 40 years. This is a new 4K remastered edition, but there’s not a lot of new extras on the Blu-ray. It is still worth picking up, if you don’t have it, but not a Pick of the Week contender.

The Reincarnation of Peter Proud - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This movie has one review on Rotten Tomatoes, so it is practically a forgotten film. However, it is still in the top five best-selling new releases of the week according to Amazon. Summer is always the slowest time of year for the home market, but this is still terrible.

Sword Oratoria - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray or Limited Edition Blu-ray Combo Pack Box Set
The spin-off of Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? The original is a good show, with some ecchi elements. I hear this one is better, but the site I go to for reviews has been down for maintenance for the past 33 hours.

WWE: Randy Savage Unreleased - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Another release that wouldn’t make the list on an average week. It’s good value on a price-per-minute basis, if you are a fan of old-school WWE.

Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon:
Au Hasard Balthazar: The Criterion Collection - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Blood Suckers from Outer Space - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray

Monster Rancher: The Complete Series - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Odds Against Tomorrow - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Red River: The Criterion Collection - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Shocking Dark - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Show By Rock!!: Season Two + Shorts - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
Smash Palace - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
The Two of Us - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Zombie 3 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Zombie 4 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
The list of secondary Blu-ray releases are a nearly even mix of classics, like Au Hasard Balthazar; Anime titles, like Show By Rock!!; and B-movie goodness, like Blood Suckers from Outer Space. There’s something for everyone, including one of the best Blaxploitation films ever, Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song.

4K Ultra HD Releases - Buy from Amazon:
There are no 4K releases this week. This isn’t a surprise, since there are so few releases overall.

TV on DVD Megasets - Buy from Amazon:
Haunted - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Jackass TV and Movie Collection - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
There are only two Megasets this week, sort of. The first show only lasted one season and the second has more movie than TV episodes.

Video on Demand - Buy from Amazon:
The Hurricane Heist - Reviews - Video on Demand
Love, Simon - Reviews - Video on Demand
Peter Pan - Reviews - Video on Demand (Movie Only)
Peter Pan - Reviews - Video on Demand (With Bonus Features)
Peter Pan: Return to Never Land - Reviews - Video on Demand
Unsane - Reviews - Video on Demand
A Wrinkle in Time - Reviews - Video on Demand
There are a lot of first-run and classic films hitting this VOD this week. Including several that are worth checking out like Love, Simon and Unsane.
