Friday Estimates: Infinity War Just a Day Away from $400 million
May 5, 2018
Infinity War dominated the Friday box office chart with $31.43 million for an 8-day total of $369.76 million. The only film with a faster pace than Infinity War is The Force Awakens. Granted, this is down just over 70% from the film’s opening Friday, but it is 9% ahead of Black Panther’s second Friday. If this film has the same internal multiplier, then it will pull in $122 million over the full weekend. That’s a little too bullish for my tastes, but $120 million is still fantastic for a sophomore stint.
Overboard opened in a distant second place with $4.82 million; however, this is a good start for a movie playing in only 1,623 theaters and dealing with such incredible competition. It should earn just over $13 million over the weekend, which is in line with yesterday’s revised prediction. Its reviews are just 32% positive, but it did earn an A minus from CinemaScore, so moviegoers are enjoying it more than critics did.
Tully is not as fortunate, as it only made $1.16 million on Friday. It will avoid the Mendoza line, barely, with just under $3 million over the weekend. It did earn fantastic reviews (it was too small to get a CinemaScore rating), but theater owners will probably drop the film before its word-of-mouth can do its work.
Bad Samaritan opened in eighth place with $645,000 on Friday, but there are enough films close behind that it likely won’t end up in the top ten over the full weekend. Its reviews are close to the overall positive level, while it earned a B minus from CinemaScore, which isn’t terrible for a horror film. Look for $1.8 million over the weekend and 11th place.
