Theater Averages: Padmaavat Spices Up the Theater Average Chart

Padmaavat was the only film to hit the $10,000 club earning an average of $13,179 in 324 theaters.

There were only a handful of other new limited releases and only one of them opened above the Mendoza Line. Kickboxer: Retaliation was the best of the rest of the new limited releases with $3,061 in one theater. This isn’t a good result, but it is playing on VOD, so it is better than expected. Like Me wasn’t as lucky, as it earned an average of $1,688 in three theaters. West of the Jordan River had an even worse opening with $1,047 in its lone theater. Finally, Please Stand By only managed an average of $818 in five theaters; however, it was also playing in VOD.

This past week also saw milestones reached for several Per Theater Chart alumni:

• Padmaavat opened with more than $4 million, so it hit several milestones during its opening weekend.
• Phantom Thread manged to reach $10 million over the weekend, but it has peaked at the box office. It should still get to $15 million, but beyond that might be a stretch.
• Call Me by Your Name got to $10 million before the weekend and since it picked up four Oscar nominations, getting to $15 million is a solid goal.
• Hostiles earned $10 million during its first weekend in wide release, so obviously it hit that milestone. It should have no trouble getting to $20 million, but $30 million feels like a stretch.
• I, Tonya topped $15 million early last weekend and it nearly hit $20 million over the weekend.
• Molly’s Game reached $25 million just before the weekend, but that’s as far as it will go.
• Lady Bird got to $40 million early in the weekend and $45 million seems like a safe bet. In fact, since it picked up five Oscar nominations, $50 million isn’t out of the question.
• The Shape of Water hit $35 million over the weekend. It picked up a ton of Oscar nominations and that’s clearly helping its box office chances.
• Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri also hit $35 million over the weekend and since it has been winning a lot of awards, I don’t think it will slow down just yet.
• Darkest Hour reached $45 million over the weekend and has a clear path to $50 million.
• The Post made it all the way to $55 million and it is the biggest limited release hit of 2017.
