The Tragically Hip: A National Celebration

By this time next week, Christmas will be over. This resulted in a short list, but not a bad week. Dunkirk is the biggest new release of the week and it is award-worthy and a contender for Pick of the Week. It isn’t the only contender, The Amicus Collection, Stronger, A Town Called Panic: The Collection, and others are too. As for the best of the best, I went with The Tragically Hip: A National Celebration on DVD or Blu-ray.

The Amicus Collection - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
This four-disc set contains three movies from Amicus, a horror studio that was around from the late 1960s to the early 1970s. There are a lot of extras on this set, including a feature-length documentary about the studio. It is easily worth picking up and a contender for Pick of the Week. You can also buy the films individually, but that could cost about $10 more and wouldn’t include the bonus disc. This release has appeared on our list in the past, because it has had multiple release dates on Amazon. I’m not sure what is happening, but right now, the release date is December 19th. Let’s hope it doesn’t change again.

Dunkirk - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
This is one of the best-reviewed wide releases of the year and it has even picked up some Awards Season nominations. There is only one extra, but it is a nearly two-hour long making of documentary. That’s enough to be a Pick of the Week contender for sure. Also coming out this week is a Christopher Nolan 4K Ultra HD Box Set. It’s a good deal, but not a great deal. Just under $150 for seven movies in 4K is worth it, if you’ve already made the leap to 4K. On the other hand, if you already have just two of them, buying the rest individually might be the better deal. Although it appears to be the only way to get The Prestige on 4K, which is a business practice I dislike.

Game of Thrones: Season Seven - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
The screener for this release arrived a little late, but I got the review done this weekend. I already named it Pick of the Week, and it lived up to that title.

Leatherface - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Don’t give Teenage Slashers backstories. It is almost never worth it. Especially don’t give them sympathetic backstories.

The Lego Ninjago Movie - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack, 3D Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
It appears the Lego franchise had too many installments too quickly. The quality dropped and the demand by the moviegoers dried up as well. It didn’t exactly bomb, but it will need a lot of help on the home market to break even. There are a lot of extras on the Blu-ray, so that should help, but it might take years to break even.

Mobile Suit Gundam Wing Collector's Ultra Edition - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
This is one of the best Anime titles from the 1990s. Granted, the box set is a lot of money, but the 13-disc set has close to 30 hours of entertainment, so if you are a fan of Anime from that era, it is worth it.

mother! - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
One of the most divisive movies released in wide release in a long time. The initial response to the film by moviegoers was... negative is putting it too lightly. It earned an F from CinemaScore and there have only been just over a dozen films to earn an F in the company's history. However, I truly think this was because audiences just didn’t know what to expect and the trailer didn’t sell the film as it was. I think with time, audiences will become more receptive to the movie. That said, I can only recommend a rental, because it is so divisive.

South Park: Blu-ray Releases
Season 6 - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Season 7 - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Season 8 - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Season 9 - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Season 10 - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Season 11 - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Season 10 was the last season to have a classic episode, but even then, I’d grown out of the show. It’s gotten worse and looking back, there’s a lot of problems with show I didn’t notice before.

Stronger - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This film earned 93% positive reviews, but the average score given to it by critics was just 7.5 out of 10. This is still a good score and makes it a Pick of the Week contender. However, it’s not award-worthy and the film was clearly made to win awards. The extras are light with just a single featurette, so it doesn’t quite win Pick of the Week, but it is still a solid purchase.

Suspiria: Limited Edition Steelbook - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
This is Dario Argento’s best movie, and that’s saying a lot. Additionally, there are a lot of extras on this 3-disc set, including a CD soundtrack. On the other hand, the asking price is $90. That’s a lot, but it is still worth it for hardcore fans.

A Town Called Panic: The Collection - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
This show is amazing, but nearly impossible to describe. It’s intentionally cheap-looking stop-animation about the adventures of Cowboy and Indian, who are morons who keep getting into trouble, and their other friend, Horse, who keeps having to clean up their messes. I pre-ordered it and I really hope it arrives before Christmas, because one of the short movies in the collection is a Christmas movie and I need to subject my family to its brilliance.

The Tragically Hip: A National Celebration - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
I mentioned this concert film on the Holiday Gift Guide and I think it is easily a Pick of the Week contender. It is the patriotic duty of Canadians to buy it. Speaking of patriotic Canadians, Trailer Park Boys: Season Ten is also coming out this week.

Victoria and Abdul - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
This film was made to win awards, but while it is good, it is not award-worthy. It is still worth checking out, but with only a couple of featurettes, a rental will do for most people.

It’s a huge list of secondary VOD releases this week. It is the biggest release, by a large, large margin. It isn’t the only one worth checking out, on the other hand. Battle of the Sexes, In Search of Fellini, and others earned good reviews.
