Limited and VOD Releases: Tonya is Keeping its “I” on the Prize
December 8, 2017
We are deep into Awards Season, but that just means there is a lot of competition already in theaters and there’s not much new coming out this week. Only one film, I, Tonya, has any real hope at finding box office success.

Secondary VOD Releases:
A sequel to Fukrey, which didn’t do well at the box office here. It obviously did well in its native India, on the other hand.
Margot Robbie stars as the titular Tonya Harding in this biopic. The film is earning 90% positive reviews with an average of 8 out of 10. That’s enough to be an Awards Season contender. Even if it doesn’t pick up a Best Picture nomination, Margot Robbie could earn more than a few nominations along the way. That said, the competition is really intense at the moment, so it is wise to be a little cautious over its box office chances. This film will obviously be the biggest hit on this week’s list, but getting a spot in the top ten per theater average chart for the year might be tough.

Toby Jones plays a middle aged man just out of prison who is trying to get back into the dating scene while dealing with a clinging mother. This could be a setup to a romantic comedy, but this is far from that. This psychological thriller is earning good reviews, but not good enough reviews to survive in limited release. Furthermore, it is playing on VOD, so its box office chances are negligible. That said, it is worth $6 for a VOD rental.
Video on Demand
Based on a true story, this movie is about an investigative journalist who goes undercover with some Somalia pirates, but his inexperience could get him killed. The reviews are only 50% positive and it is playing on VOD, so its box office chances are nearly zero.
A documentary about the gang rape of an African-American woman in 1944 and how the NAACP tried to get justice in a time where most victims of similar crimes didn’t speak out, for fear of retribution. The film’s reviews are amazing, but documentaries rarely find success in theaters. Maybe if it earns some Awards Season buzz it will find an audience by the time it reaches the home market.
Bullet Head - Reviews - Video on Demand
Hollow in the Land - Reviews - Video on Demand
November Criminals - Reviews - Video on Demand
Hollow in the Land is actually earning really good reviews, but it is a Canadian film playing on VOD, so I fear it is too far beneath the average moviegoer’s radar to be noticed.
