Friday Estimates: Jigsaw Cuts Its Way to the Top with $7.17 million

October 28, 2017

Jigsaw

As predicted, Jigsaw led the way on Friday. However, it didn’t do as well as previews suggested, as it earned $7.17 million during its opening day. I don’t expect its legs to improve during the rest of the weekend, as its reviews are just 37% positive, and it earned a B from CinemaScore. It will still do better than our $14 million prediction, but not by as much as we thought it would yesterday. Look for $17 million over the weekend, which is the second weakest opening in the franchise and the weakest in terms of ticket sales. I really think Lionsgate will end this franchise, at least for a while. Perhaps, in ten years or so, we will get a remake.

Tyler Perry’s Boo 2: A Madea Halloween earned second place with $2.63 million on Friday. This is 65% lower than its opening Friday. By comparison, the original only fell 51% Friday-over-Friday. On the other hand, the film will earn about $10 million this weekend for a ten-day total of $25 million. This is a good result for a film that cost just $20 million to make, but don’t expect Boo! 3 next year.

Geostorm matched expectations, almost, with $1.55 million on Friday putting it on pace for nearly $6 million over the weekend. The movie will lose money, but maybe it can do well enough worldwide to save face.

Thank You for Your Service matched expectations nearly perfectly with $1.5 million on Friday, putting it on pace for $4 million over the weekend. Sadly, this means it only has a 50/50 change of avoiding the Mendoza Line during its opening weekend. On the positive side, its reviews are good enough to be certified fresh, assuming it gets to 80 reviews without dropping more than a couple of percentage points, and it earned a solid A minus from CinemaScore. Fortunately, it only cost $20 million to make, so Universal won’t lose a lot of money here.

Suburbicon was even worse with just $1.1 million on its way to an opening weekend of just under $3 million. Its reviews are terrible, but it did even worse with CinemaScore, earning a D minus. It will practically disappear from theaters before Thanksgiving and will be all but forgotten by the time it hits the home market.
