Theater Averages: Apes Overtake MacBeth $13,989 to $12,907
July 18, 2017
War for the Planet of the Apes earned first place on the weekend box office chart and the theater average chart with $13,989. The only other new release to come close to that was Lady Macbeth with an average of $12,907 in five theaters. Last week’s winner, Spider-Man: Homecoming, slipped to third place this weekend with an average of $10,167. It is still quite rare for a wide release to stay in the $10,000 club two weeks in a row, so this is a reason to celebrate.
The rest of the new limited releases were pretty far behind. Footnotes was the best of the rest with $5,900 in one theaters. The Wrong Light and The Most Important Thing were neck-and-neck with $5,429 and $5,370 respectively as both were playing in one theater. False Confessions struggled with an average of $3,681 in just two theaters. Birthright: A War Story opened with $3,006 in one theater, which isn’t terrible for a documentary. It’s not good either. The widest limited release of the week was Jagga Jasoos, which earned an average of $2,334 in just over 200 theaters.
There were two films that missed the Mendoza line ($2,000/theater). I am the Blues earned an average of $1,276 in four theaters over the weekend, while its Wednesday through Sunday average was $1,633. Finally there’s Blind, which only managed an average of $894 in 14 theaters.
This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:
