Limited and VOD Releases: Sick and Tired
June 23, 2017
Not many limited releases are earning any real buzz this week. The Beguiled has the best pedigree and its reviews might be good enough to help it thrive in theaters. The Bad Batch is the biggest in terms of theaters, but its box office potential is close to zero. This leaves The Big Sick as the best new release. That said, if you are not near one of the five theaters it is playing, you could always stay home and binge GLOW on Netflix. I reviewed it this week and it is worth the praise.

Secondary VOD Releases:
Video on Demand
This is the biggest limited release of the week, at least in terms of theater count. Its reviews are mixed and it is playing on VOD, so it will likely go no where at the box office.
The latest film from Sofia Coppola is is a remake / re-adaptation. It is about a boarding house for women in the Civil War which gets a male guest, one who was injured in the war. The film’s reviews are right on the border between merely good and good enough to thrive in limited release. I think the star power might help it during its opening weekend, but I don’t know if the word-of-mouth will be strong enough for it to thrive in limited release.
Emily and Kumail begin a relationship, but soon she gets sick. Now they have to deal with the medical industry, all while Kumail has to deal with his family and Emily’s. The film’s reviews are amazing and it is earning the best buzz of any film on this week’s list. The Big Sick opens tonight in five theaters and it is the best bet on this week’s list.
A documentary about food and GMOs that actually takes a pro-science view. There are only three reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, but so far all three are positive.
An experimental documentary about the effects of silence and noise on people. Its reviews are amazing, but this film has no chance to survive outside of the art house circuit.
A biography of Bertrand Tavernier, a French filmmaker with an extensive knowledge of his home country’s cinematic history. If you are interested in the history of French cinema, then this is a must see.
A documentary about the war in Iraq shot by an Iraqi who is trying to help is family survive, despite the deteriorating situation around him. There are not a lot of reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, but this is one of a handful of documentaries that are earning 100% reviews.
An ornithologist in Portugal is trying to find a rare bird when he is swept away on a river and begins a religious journey. This film is earning some of the best reviews of the week, but it is a foreign-language film, so any box office success it earns will be from the art house circuit.
This movie is about two brothers living in a small town in India. They have no other family so they rely on each other, but when one of them is drafted into the war, the other tries to stop it to get his brother back safely. There are no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, but that’s common for Bollywood films, so it isn’t a bad omen for its box office chances.
Ripped - Reviews - Video on Demand
There is only one secondary VOD release this week as well. It’s a time travel / stoner comedy that is earning 0% positive reviews. Skip it.
