Weekend Estimates: Lego Batman Pieces Together Second Weekend Win
February 19, 2017
The Lego Batman Movie will secure another weekend at the top of the box office chart thanks to a modest 35% drop from its opening, and soft openings for all the new wide releases. The animated adventure will make $34.2 million over three days, and is expected to earn about $45 million when the President’s Day holiday numbers are added in. It will pass $100 million at the domestic box office tomorrow.
Lego Batman is also racking up decent numbers overseas, where it will take in $21.5 million this weekend, for $72 million in total to date. That’s around half of the take for the current foreign champ, though: Fifty Shades Darker will earn about $43.7 million abroad this weekend, which will take it to $187.2 million in all internationally. Adding in a second-weekend $21 million domestically, for $89.7 million at home, and the film’s global total is a solid $276.9 million.
Nothing, perhaps, illustrates the plight of The Great Wall better than the fact that Fifty Shades Darker could fall 55% and still beat its opening weekend. Universal’s big Chinese co-production bet will pick up a modest $18.1 million on debut in North America, which is a little more than a tenth of what it’s made in China so far ($171 million). With an international total of $244.6 million, the film is really being saved by the Chinese figure—it’s made less than $100 million outside of that territory. There’s not much hope of a turnaround from this kind of opening.
Also failing to do much business this weekend are Fist Fight, which will pick up $12 million and land in fifth place, and A Cure for Wellness, which is set for a dismal $4.2 million over three days. The latter had a creative marketing campaign that clearly didn’t pay off, although Fox should get some credit for trying… the industry only evolves through innovation, and Fox will need plenty of that if it’s going to challenge Disney and Universal for top-billing at the box office.
In limited release, dollars are spread pretty thin on the last weekend before Oscar night. Two films will break through the $10,000 per theater average though. KEDi follows its huge opening weekend by expanding into seven theaters, and will pick up around $78,500. Chapter & Verse will earn a projected $10,928 from a single location in its third weekend in release.
