Friday Estimates: BvS Sinks 81% Friday over Friday to $15.35 million
April 2, 2016
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is officially in trouble after falling 81% on the Friday over Friday comparison. It only managed $15.35 million at the box office yesterday, which is 5.4% less than Deadpool earned during its second Friday of its release. Granted, BvS still has a nearly $30 million lead over Deadpool after 8 days of release, but unless it bounces back on Saturday, that lead isn't safe. Look for between $50 million and $51 million over the weekend. Also look out for panicked Warner Bros. executives and possible rescheduling of some of the D.C. Extended Universe upcoming releases.
God's Not Dead 2 had a somber opening with just $2.95 million on Friday. This is a tiny bit better than God's Not Dead's opening day. It did earn an A from CinemaScore, so the target audience obviously liked it more than the critics did. Unfortunately, sequels tend to be more front-loaded than original films are, so this film's opening weekend will likely be closer to $8 million than $9 million. That's still not a bad start for this type of film and it likely cost very little, so it will break even sooner rather than later.
Meanwhile, Meet the Blacks opened in seventh place with $1.43 million. There are still not enough reviews for a Tomatometer Score and it only opened in 1,000 theaters, so there's no CinemaScore either. I would expect just under $4 million for its opening weekend. It could have been much worse.
