Weekend Final Numbers: Star Wars Wreaks Havoc on Record Book
December 21, 2015
The final weekend numbers are in for Star Wars: The Force Awakens and it crushed the previous record with $247,966,675 million. This is 19% more than Jurassic World’s opening record and better than our Saturday Analysis had it pegged at. I think the reason it did so much better is the number of sold out screenings. Friday’s numbers were artificially lower, because so many screenings were sold out that people who would have gone to see the movie on Friday simply couldn’t. Additionally, the film’s reviews are among the best for any wide release this year, so the word of mouth certainly should be a factor here. We don’t have final numbers for all films that were in theaters this weekend, but yet another record has been broken: the Biggest Combined Weekend Total.
Looking at the records we predicted would fall, the film set five of the six records we thought were most likely to fall. The only one it didn’t break was widest release, which it would have broken, had Disney not rejected so many theaters for not being up to their standards. Of the eight make or break records, the film has already topped three of them, with another record poised to fall, maybe. We don’t have the final Global Opening Weekend numbers, but the film has no worse than a 50/50 chance of breaking that. With Christmas landing on a Friday, the Second Weekend Record seems very likely to fall, leaving just the three yearly records left on that list. At worse, The Force Awakens will go seven for eight on that list and a clean sweep is also possible.
We will get to the usual Weekend Wrap-Up once we have final numbers for the rest of the theatrical releases.
